Old hunting pics

I got the idea from the facebook page but I thought it might be fun to see old hunting pics of family or friends. This is my grandpa and some buddies after a good hunting trip. He ranched between Wilsall and Clyde Park Montana. This was taken in Montana but cant remember where off the top of my head. Grandpa is on the far left. One of my favorite pictures.

Very cool. I hope to see some more. Old pics of me has been posted before and I got some serious jabs for the mullet and jeans I wore while hunt so I will refrain from doing that again. Lol

Dang, I thought this thread was pictures of Old Hunter aka Bigfoot. Cool picture, I don't have any old pics from my family.

In 1974, my dad, brother, and brother in-law went on a hunt in Alaska in the Wrangell Mountains. I'm the caboose in the family, 15 years younger than my brother and 21 years younger than my brother in law, but got to tag along on the trip.

One afternoon we all took a horseback ride out of camp and spotted this caribou along the river, they asked my brother in law if he wanted to shoot it, and he said he would pass (he later shot a B&C caribou that scored 410). They then told me I needed to shoot this caribou. I had NO idea I was even hunting. I had been practicing the prior months with a .243, but no one told me that I was going to get to hunt. Apparently the outfitter (Doug Vaden) had told my dad that he liked kids coming along on the hunts and if my dad bought me a caribou tag, he we let me shoot a caribou for free. I was so excited. I had to shoot off a rest, so my dad laid down on the gravel and I took a rest over his back with the scope bobbing around with every move he made. This was my very first big game animal ever, a Barren Ground Caribou. It is still mounted hanging over my desk. I was 10 years old.

Other memories were:

The old log lodge at the base camp. When the outfitter discovered it, it had been occupied by a hibernating grizzly for years. The camp cook made some great food and one of the guides eating peanut butter and jelly on his pancakes.

The evening when my dad, his guide and I were spike camped for moose, and I wandered off finding lots of moose sheds, the further I wandered, the more I found. When my dad found me, he was in tears, and I said to him "I was just headed over the next hill".

The time I got left on the trail with my horse to wait for the guide following up in the rear, but he never showed up so I started hollering.

A road apple fight by the horse barn with the girl my age that was the camp helper.

The lake we horse backed into to fish for grayling. We were fishing in the sun, and no one was catching a thing, so I wandered over to the shady side of the lake and caught 20 fish before any one had a clue I was catching anything. My dad finally showed up and we caught something like 50 fish and everyone else only caught a couple.

Good times.

These are 2 of my grandmas brothers but I dont know anything else about the pic or what year it was taken but I expect it was in the 1930's. I find it kinda funny that a few years ago I bought the same Remington pump action rifle as in the pic and I never noticed it until today.

Here is a old photo of me in 1962 with a Montana buck. My dad would take my brother and me out of school for two or three weeks every fall to hunt starting in 1961. I missed a few years while in college but I still love to get out-of-state every year. Tougher now with the tag situation. Still, the highlight of my year.

Thats a cool pic, and a nice buck. Do you still have the rack?
Thanks! No, I don't have the rack anymore...not sure what happened to it. Back then we were elk hunters and there were lots of deer. Funny though, there were very few elk then. Many times we did not see a elk during the whole hunting trip!

Love the pic Moose. I wish I could have talked my dad into doing that when I was in school. Now I think he wishes the same thing. He never hunted out of state until 2009 and now that's all he talks about.

Here are a couple of photos of my Great Grandfather from the 50's. I stall have the 4x5 buck (middle buck) hanging in my house. I think I have some other photos I'll try and dig up from my Grandfather and Great Grandfather's hunting trips.

I wanted to share a story with you. In this thread, I shared a picture and a post about my first hunting trip when I was 10 years old when my family hunted with Doug Vaden in Alaska. I was just contacted today with the following private message (personal info removed):

"Doug is now age 92 and when i spotted his name here, i printed the story... when i read to him at a get together tears came to his eyes... Doug is a very active gentleman and has so much joy in his eyes as well as his heart.... he has stories to tell of his life.. and you were also in them... What could be the possibility of meeting Doug sometime in the future.. he would so love it... thank you dearly... or maybe even a phone call... he now lives in......

..... is my cousin and has his phone number... please call .... and get hold of Doug... he has a hearing aid... so will likely be some communication challenge.... It would be so beautiful for him to know you have enjoyed Hunting so much...
thank you,

......

ps we have photos of your hunting.."

What a great story and the chance to reconnect because of this forum. :)

Wow UH. That is really awesome. You really never know how you may impact someone else's life. I'm sure that mr. Vaden never thought he would become part of a permanent memory of yours, just like you've become part of his. What a great story.
