Buddy and I leave tonight for our first western big game hunt. We will be chasing mulies in SE MT for a week. Secured permission a some type 2 BMAs for most of the trip and have some other public spots to check out if needed. Looks like a big change in temp with tomorrow being 60 and next Friday in the 20s possibly. Wish it was colder the whole time but looks like great weather to be outside. We will take lots of pictures and report as able. We are both super excited.

Open to any last minute tips, tricks, updates on the rut/deer quality. We plan to have the glass help us work through the huge parcels we will be on.

What a great time to be hunting muleys. The bucks will be in rut and you should see lots of deer. Should be fun to look 'em over. Best of luck!

We just got back from SE Montana on Saturday. Take knee pads for stalks. Watch out for cactus. (We found that out the hard way.) Glass an area and check it again a few minutes later. One minute there wouldn't be anything there, we'd come back 10 minutes later and there would be a deer.

Good luck to you. Weather doesn't make a huge difference for mule deer in The rut. They will move all day long in 50 degree weather. Snow certainly helps with spotting, but I like to spot the white rumps and faces better anyway. Take some good glass and a tripod. Take lots of pictures, you guys will love it. I hunt MT every other year and we are always successful. Not a lot of big mature bucks, but enough deer to keep you interested.

Saw probably 150 deer. Most from the road, but walked just over 8 miles wih some steep climbs in some badlands type terrain. Passed on a modest 4x4 less than an hour into the hunt and a 3x3 this evening. Pulled an all nighter driving out so turning in early to get ready for the week. Saw a big 2x2 that was probabaly the most mature buck and a guy and a kid with two nice bucks in the truck. A fair bit of rut activity in the morning and afternoon with a mid day lull when we found bucks bedded.

I just came through MT and it was pretty warm for this time of year. There is a little snow up high in the mountains. Im not sure its got cold enough yet to really kick off the rut. When i have hunted MT in these conditions the older bucks were starting to rut a little but the younger bucks werent even thinking about it.
