24 hours till the archery opener and although I'm not there my spies on the mountain tell me young bulls are starting to trash out trees, herd bulls are still high taking it easy and the cow calf summer groups are in their normal places pre rut. We have 1 bear tag, 1 either sex archery elk, 1 either sex muzzleloader elk tag, 2 x cow muzzleloader tags and a muzzleloader deer tag to fill. I go up the mountain 5th Sept and will once again try and provide a comedic take from camp to include actual hunting stories once a day when I go hi to check in.

Double check your packing lists. Have a plan A, B and C. Shoot straight, and often if you can:) Be safe, good luck and God bless.

Its a great day for elk camp!!!

Good luck, we have 2 ML cow tags and 2 2nd season buck tags up that way also. Went up 10 days ago and water is good and lots of green vegation everywhere. Should be a great trip and getting itchy to get going.

Back in CONUS now. 3am and I'm wide awake suffering from 11 time zones of travel. Not in any particular order. If you never tried Lavazza Itailian coffee, trust me you should. It will make you realize why Europeans call our coffee "American dish water".

I get to take two newbies in this year. One muzzle cow and one either sex archery elk. As I get older I realize I think I have more fun the years I don't have a tag in September.

Will start the 48 hours of packing this am then get on the road the 5th.
Murdochs has a clearance sale on a Buck knife with a single blade and hoof pick. Really good deal for a lifetime warranty. Normally 60-70$ I picked one up for 25$. For the first timers, show up to camp with a hoof pick and help the wrangler take care of the stocks hooves.

It's a great day for elk camp.

Western /Northwestern overnight report. Had the first report of a herd bull sneak in to a call silent. A buddy missed him unfortunately. Caught him off guard as he tried the let sneak and reach for my bow move. Looks like a small front is gonna push through Sat ,Sun Mon of the opener and bring slightly cooler temps and a 40% chance of afternoon rain everyday.

This is the first year in the last 10 that I'm packing without my son due to him being up at UDUB . Sucks but oh so proud of him.

Take a kid hunting, let them miss a little school and put em in the mountains for a week.

It's a great day for elk camp.

Good luck, at least he picked a good school. Half the students bail for hunting season every fall.
We live 1 block from campus. Saw a decent 5 pt, looked like, come in yesterday to the house across the road. Somebody had some luck.

Camp is set. Looks like not much rain the past 21 days or so up here. Scrub oak is browning up. Really dusty and dry. Will be getting after them in the am.

Good luck, headed up tomorrow so I have been packing all day yesterday and today. Hunt starts Saturday so it is nice to get camp set up a day early and a good night sleep before the hunt. OK maybe not sleep but some rest.

Saw 2 groups of cows this am. 1st group of 10 was below us and the downslope before sunrise got us before we could move on them. They winded us and bumped down into the valley. Second group was coming off a waterhole we were headed to opposite way we were moving and I walked right into the lead cow at 20 yards. Both me and her were surprised. Lastly about 9am we got 4 bugles out of what I think was a bull going to bed but we never saw him. All in all not a bad first morning considering the lack of any weather, lots of sun and big moon.

In em this am as we had a heavy horned 5x6 come to the call. Just misjudged the set up and he came in 20 yards on the wrong side of a clump of trees.

Well am of the 1st day of muzzleloader is in the books. I'm back at camp tending to the stock. Smelled em, heard em, saw em......just didn't shoot any. 4-6 bulls bugleing this am and groups of 5 to 6 cows moving around. Just making noise from 1st light till 8am then pretty quiet. Really coming out late at night also to feed. Found 3 real nice shooter bucks for the young man in camp and I think we got one bear patterned down so I'm gonna go after him starting tommorrow. Still pretty hot and dry up here and very inconsistent winds.
It's a great day for elk camp.
