First Post!

I'm a traveling hunter and do most of my whitetail hunting in Ontario, WI and MN. Pressure is getting fierce though...everybody is playing follow the leader.

So, I'm looking at possibly hunting N. Idaho in the next 2-3 years. Hows the pressure?

I hunted Northern Idaho for the first time last November and I was surprised at the amount of hunting pressure. I can't see how the whitetail population will hold steady with an almost three month long ANY DEER/any weapon season given the number of hunters I was seeing. I wish there was a limited entry area for archery only in November....

Thanks...that's what I was afraid of. Not sure if I'd wanna drive 30 hours to hunt with a couple thousand other guys.

I've seen the U.P. of MI run down since the 90's, NW Ontario was ran down over about a 5 year period, N. Wisconsin is almost a complete dead area now and N. MN is getting that way. It's amazing what a tad bit of overhunting and weather can do. 2009 in MN we canoed in 6 1/2 miles from the nearest road to get away from the other hunters and the hunt wasn't any better than hunting near the road...discouraging to say the least. I may have to switch over to hunting other game. The whitetail world just isn't what it used to be on public land in the big woods.

Dooger, I hear you about Wisconsin. Hunted there a few years ago, when the sun came up I thought I wandered
into a pumpkin patch! There was orange seemingly behind every tree! I guess that's what happens when you
crowd 600,00+ hunters into a 9 day gun season! Never again!

I have hunted Northern Idaho for the last 15 consecutive years. In the units I hunt (8A and 10A) I have not noticed extensive pressure. I would be more concerned about the impact of the wolves on the deer and elk populations. The quality of the hunting has deteriorated greatly over the last several years. This year was terrible. I hunted out there from the 9th through the 21st. Deer densities are way down and mature buck sightings were way down. If you decide to go,later in the month of November is better and get to where you are on the fringe of agricultural area's or in agricultural area's. If I go back thats what I wil be doing. I will be coming down out of the higher elevations.

I am a native North Idahoan and have been hunting here for the last 40 years, if you noticed the terrain and vegetation coverage we hunt in, you would have realized why the deer population has remained steady, even with our very liberal season. The major effects on the deer population are hard winters and now, unfortunately, the wolf issue. I haven't hunted up North the last couple of years (I have been chasing mule deer in the South while I am still able), but I know from my friends that the deer herd is not at the levels we are use to. We attribute most of it to the winters we have had the last couple of years and definetly the wolves are having a major impact.

Hunting pressure has also increased. When I was a kid you never saw too many out of state hunters, but now our local motel is full for most of November, and we are actually seeing deer camps set up out in the woods, which in the past was unheard of. I would think that any hunt in this region with the word "limited" would be a very hard sell, several years ago the Fish and Game started limiting our elk hunting opportunities and the quality of our herd has declined ever since, even before wolves were reintoduced. There is a late archery season for deer in the month of December which has very minimal pressure.

I've hunted the So E of ID for many years guided and DIY for Elk and Deer. There are way to many hunters for me any more. The numbers of animals are way down from passed years. For me I won't return any time soon. I think there are other states that have more to offer then ID. It's sad to say because I really enjoy hunting ID and the country is awesome.
