Hello everyone. I'm going to be heading to Colorado this fall for a 4th season mule deer hunt. I have very little experience under my belt mule deer hunting. I've only hunted mule deer once before in my life. It was in Wyoming and didn't require any points to draw the tag. Needless to say I kinda threw a dart at map and went hunting. I had a blast hunting even though I never had a opportunity at a buck. Learned a bunch of what not to do's on that hunt. Anyway I saved up some points and drew a Colorado tag and I am currently trying to research and figure stuff out as much as possible on my own. My question is, I'm looking at hunting an old burn area. Do I focus on the entire burn area or more so toward the edges of the burn. Thanks for your time

Depending on where the unit is and the elevation there might be deer in that burn and then again there might not be. It will also depend a lot on the weather and if there is snow on the ground or not along with where the majority of does are living. 4th season if you find the does odds are you will find the bucks but the does will be migrating to lower country in October weather there is snow or not.

But to answer your question I would hunt the edges early in the mornings before the sun comes up and hope to catch one moving back in to the thicker cover or be in position a couple hours before dark to watch them come out to feed.

Thanks JimP. The area I am looking at is where the Hayman fire was back in 2002. So hopefully the elevation will be good like you said depending on the weather. I plan on getting there 4-5 days ahead of my season to try and scout as much as I can

Good luck on your hunt. Try doing a few searches here on the forum and see if you can find some old threads that have some info for you.

One thing to keep in mind...there is a 3 day gap between 3rd & 4th seasons. 3rd ends on Nov 11, 4th starts on Nov 14. If you get there 4 days early, 3rd season will still be hunting.

I partly agree with this. However, this is a great time to see where everyone is and know where not to go since the animals will most likely be pressured.

This has crossed my mind but I just figured any amount of scouting before the 4th season the better. Unfortunately I live so far away and have to make it the best it can be with my work schedule
