Hi All,

My name is Ken and I recently relocated from Tokyo - Japan.
I picked up bow hunting in the last year and as it's not allowed to bowhunt in Japan I am very eager to finally be able to go out in the Colorado Backcountry and hunt!

Not coming from a hunting background I found myself having to research everything from archery tips to scouting, backpacking, gear, etc. etc.
I am still very green to all things hunting and this forum has been providing me with a wealth of information on where to start and build.

I am grateful to all the members who have replied to my question recently posted and I hope I will be able to contribute as well in the near future.

If you are around Lakewood and want to meet, chat and banter about hunting while sipping a cold one, do not hesitate to reach out!

Cheers.
K.

Welcome to the site!
Reading posts like yours helps me realize just how fortunate I was to grow up hunting from the age of 5 or 6! Regardless, jump in, learn all you can and make up for lost time. You'll love it!

Hi!

In Japan there is lots of great fishing and a lot of cool stuff like Tenkara etc.
As for hunting with virtually zero gun ownership there is not much to brag about. Getting a rifle for hunting is oincredibly complicated (you can read this article if interested in knowing more: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2013/01/29/reference/in-japan-gun-control-is-the-norm-and-discipline-is-rigid/).
Average age of hunters is over 60yo.
Archery (western archery not the traditional Japanese bow or Kyudo) is veeeeery limited and bowhunting is simply not allowed.
Hence a lots of problems with wildboars, bears and even deers. Sometimes the municipalities pay hunters to shoot deers here and there but, hear me here...they THROW AWAY the carcass...because nobody knows what to do with it.
Makes me cry...
I know of an american guy who is trying to have supermarket carry game meat but we are talking drops in an ocean...
So you can understand why I am so eager to be here!!!!

Any advice (especially on GMUs) very welcome!
thanks and have a great week!

K.

Welcome.

Is there any hunting and fishing in Japan?

A tradition of it?

Very interesting article. Seems like a bunch of hoops to jump through, but if I did the math right it would cost about $1500 to get started. Not a huge price for something I value highly.

Interesting that 122k out of 190k are over 60. Seems to be dying out for sure.
