New Mexico Unit 51 Rifle tag

I was very happy to find out that I drew my first rifle tag in New Mexico in Unit 51 and was curious to hear if anyone has any knowledge of the unit? I'll be hunting with a guide and my buddy. He will be using a rifle and I'll be using my Contender pistol in 375 JDJ..... I will limit my shot to 300 yards and am confidant that I can hit my target out to that distance. Anybody hunt there? It's up near Chama, NM, so if anyone wants to meet up for a beer when we get there, let me know!

I have hunted unit 52 but not 51. I have saw a lot of elk on 285 south of tres piedres. There are a lot of elk in unit 51 but there is a lot of atv traffic as it isn't a restricted area. What hunt did you draw? I think there are 3 rifle hunts in this unit

My wife drew a rifle cow tag in unit 51 this year for the Nov.1-5 hunt. Me and my brother went there a couple years ago on the first bow hunt and he got a nice 6X6 bull and I ended up getting a bear. There is a lot of ATV traffic that you have to deal with but there are a lot of elk in there and some nice bulls. Also, its worth getting a bear tag if you desire to shoot a bear. We saw several bears and there was tons of sign. My brother and dad drew this unit also for the second bow hunt this year and I plan on going with them on their hunt also so I will be spending some time in this unit.

I will be coming from Illinois, so we hired a guide because we will not be able to do much scouting.

That should be a fantastic hunt!!! They should still be singing pretty good. I agree with sburns1 about the bears. If the quota isn't met you should get a tag. I drew unit 52 rifle oct 18-22 just north of your unit. To be perfectly honest with you I don't think it will be hard at all to find elk but finding a six pt will be the challenge.

My buddy took a beast 6x6 out there last year. He got in deep enough to where the animals didn't seem to care how close he was. Missed his first shot because he was so close. Get away from the other hunters and you'll probably be good.
