Hello all,
I apologize for asking for help as my first post ever, but I've unfortunately never had much to add to the conversations so far and have been a lurker to the forum for years. After putting in for several years my brother and I drew a tag, defiantly not our top choice but we get to hunt mule deer this year and we're pretty excited to finally be heading west. We drew NM 2b rifle Oct. 22-26. We have been up and down the internet researching like mad and seems like a very tough hunt as far as finding a decent animal is concerned. We have been playing phone tag with area wardens/biologists, and studying all the maps we can find, figured this would be a good time for some outreach from a community in the know. We can head out and scout several days prior to the season and are willing to do whatever it takes to punch some tags. We plan on camping and are no strangers to packing in our camp wherever need be. Any info or advise your willing to share would be a big help.

thanks,

The madtrapper

Welcome. You will see some nice deer. I would get a BLM map of that unit too. Go early and drive. Also you can you tell us about your self in the new members Fourm and people might help. I elk hunted that unit with a bow last year and kicked up some good bucks.

Hunted there two years ago on the same hunt. It will be tricky. I saw two buck that were 140 range but not worth the hassle. I covered miles on foot and glasses a bunch of canyons in prime time. It is to early in the year the if deer are not there yet generally speaking. I was told by the check station that the two bucks I saw were the biggest they had heard of. You will see lots of forkies and few bigger. I hunted the Colorado boarder and the res border. I would focus on the Navajo lake area and walk the closed roads. Not just walk but marathon. There are more deer there then anywhere. Gas buggy was slow the year I hunted. If it's cold you will do well but otherwise it will be tough. I used a mountain bike to cover the log roads to get closer to the canyons I wanted to hunt.
