rsess,

I don't like the NM tag system, but one thing is good about the LO tags. The state doles out sooooo many of them, the prices are relatively reasonable due to supply/demand. This is especially true if you wait till the last minute and aren't picky about a specific unit. You can get a good bull tag for $800-$1,200. Beats the hell out of paying $6,000 for an outfitter. Of course, it depends what you're looking for.

A land owner tag in the high demand units(all the gila and most of the other good ones w/out getting too specific) will run you about 4,000, sometimes a little cheaper and sometimes and few bucks more. The rest of the units can be had for about 1/2 the price. If you just want to go elk hunting you might look into getting a cow permit. The standard going rate is about 500 bucks. I put in for the draw every year, on ALL unsuccessful years for the last 15 I have gotten a cow permit. I fill the freezer and have a good time doing it.

Take a good look at the Jicarilla, you can buy a cow tag from $400 to $650 or a bull tag for $6-8000. Bulls average 300 and there are some B&C bulls. You will have to be guided but they are reasonable. I know several of the guides and one is a hunting friend.
