If you decide to DIY be prepared for extreme temps. I drew that tag in 2010 or 11 and saw air temps (not windchill) of -44. Luckily I had added extra diesel 911 to my tank cause every deisel pickup in the area was gelled up until it got a little warmer. Saw 100s of deer every day and several in the elusive 30" - 200" range. But stalking was impossible in crusty snow. Still managed 2 for 3 on respectable deer. We stayed in Dulce and made the drive every day, was nice to have a warm room to get back to at night.

Thanks csh yea have diesel havent heard of the 911 before thanks for the advice. I was hopin to take the trailer to be closer. Theres an rv camp ground near the lake I was told about. How far did have to drive? How did have the best luck. Driving or hiking? Glad to hear you were seeing the big ones. I looking forward to it.. even thou it will be probably my toughest hunt.. I am going solo also ;)

I'm not certain but I think all the RV campgrounds are closed. The area is in a high mountain valley and while -40 is not normal below 0 temps are and days above freezing in January would be maybe 25% of the time. I know all the state run campgrounds are closed at Navajo lake. Unless you have skirting for your RV and plan to run the heat 24/7 you may want to rethink that.
From Dulce to where we were hunting was about 40-60 mins depending on weather.

I hunted 2B a couple of years ago. We saw -36F a few mornings. It is cold on the unit. We stayed in Bloomfield and drove back and forth. Totally worth it to have a shower and a Bowl Game to watch in the evenings. That time of year the days are short, making the drive isn't bad at all.

We saw around 500 deer a day, but only about 1 really good buck each day. Tons of does and small bucks. Have fun and shoot straight.

Thanks for the replies. I went out and upgraded my old hoyt for the new hoyt spider turbo. That should help out the longer shots.

We stayed at Super 8. There is a micro brewery in Farmington that had good steaks and then we'd head back to the hotel and watch football before bed. With the late mornings and early nights that time of year, it's a pretty laid-back hunt. Have fun, but be careful... getting stuck and spending the night in those temps would suck.
