Hello everyone,

Lets see here....a little bit about myself... I'm Josh, I live in a small little town in North Carolina called Walkertown with my awesome wife of 10 years and our beautiful 6 year old daughter. I work as a Lodge Department Leader for Dick's Sporting Goods, and have been for the past 4 years. I have many hobbies, most of them dealing with the outdoors, archery and firearms being the top two, followed closely by fishing and kayaking. If I am not with my family or at work, I am in the woods or on the water.

I am currently in the very early stages of planning a DIY archery hunt for mule deer in the next few years, and thought this would be a great place to join for some hunting discussions. When it comes to out-of-state hunting, I will say i'm quite new to it. Have only hunted in NC and VA. Will spend a week in Ohio in Oct/Nov 2015 with bow chasing whitetails, and somewhat narrowed down to shooting for a archery hunt for mule deer in South Dakota in 2016...but hoping to get some insight from the members of this site as to what states would give me the best options.

Well, that's about it for now. Off to browse around the site and see what I can learn!

- Josh

PS, Merry Christmas to everyone!

I've been in NC over 20 years but had to look up Walkertown, which I see is a suburb of Winston-Salem. I live just SE of Charlotte in Indian Trail.

I love hunting whitetails here but it is not even a close competitor to the fun of western spot and stalk hunting.

That said, I would like to hunt the northern part of NC some, the deer in the southern end of the state just don't compare at all for size (Union County has exactly one entry in Pope and Young whereas some of the northern counties have 40+).

After you've posted on here a few dozen times, guys will start to give you some good help. Some will give you some very general help sooner if you're appreciative and they see that you're doing a good bit of research yourself, whether with the Eastmans' magazines or state Fish and Game websites, rather than just asking for the results of other people's research like some guys do.

What will help you most is to subscribe to the two magazines and look through their Members Research Sections. Or, you can subcribe to the digital version and look through those online, which is the cheapest way to do it.

Yeah, we have some good size deer around...sadly, I havn't found one in gun or bow range yet. My best with bow is 114", with gun 134". Did get to hunt a buck hard for about a week, before another guy on adjoining property shot him. He scored 152 3/8"...had a bunch of trail cam pics of that deer, just couldn't close the deal.

Spot and Stalk, I am really looking forward to. I have got one S&S under my belt in NC with a bow...took about an hour, but I finally worked my way to 32yards for a double lung shot. Still my most memorable hunt to date!

Thanks for the welcomes, and info so far. Been searching the site a a lot, and just received all the info in the mail that SD game and fish had to offer. Got right much reading there.
