I've hung mine too but the cans are manditory in some areas here in Ca, It seems the bears here have been trained by generations of parents how to get them. They just climb up close and jump onto them hanging on until they pull them down. Pretty good at breaking into cars too.

There's a bear in the Adirondaks (sp?) that has apparently figured out how to open one of the types of bear canisters...they mention it on their website.

Somebody on BPL said that she is also teaching her cubs that trick.

Thanks for your opinion on the cans...

I think for a hunting trip with all the exertion involved, 3100 cal a day is a little low unless weight loss is the goal and might be dangerous depending on the weather.

I just got 2 big bags of trailmix from the Winco Foods in Portland. They seam to have a lot of oil and nuts. One of them has 200 cals / 30 grams. The other one is 160 cals / 30 grams. I am going with all cold food for a 10 day trip. Taking a lot of variety, and it is all stuff I have tried and like. I am trying desperately to cut weight. I put it together the other day, and was at 49lbs including gun. I think I will be able to keep it around 55-58 when I am done. I was hoping for better.

This will be for a early season Bowhunt. I always keep Some extra food in the truck If I need it. In the past I have gotten by with a little less. If it was during colder weather I would definitely carry in more calories. This food pack is the average calorie count. Basically My first week food packs are a little less in calories and my second week pack is higher in calories.I guess I should also mention I usually get a few grouse while hunting. I feel pretty comfortable with this calorie count for a September hunt.

Looks like I am in the same range as you. My pack in weight is going to be right in the 56lb range including bow and everything else.

FYI, I found some new trail mix, it's from a company called Protos, they call it Paleo Trail Mix, it's a mix of jerky, nuts and fruit.

I asked them for a sample, I haven't had it yet, but I've had one of their meat sticks (which is how I found out about them) and it was really good - beef and ostrich.

I'd take the sticks along, but they just don't provide enough calories for the weight (they're low fat), but the Paleo Trail Mix is 320 calories for 3 ounces, so along the lines of a Probar.

By dropping the Bridgford sandwiches (they're good, but not enough calories for the weight), adding the Paleo Trail Mix (assuming it will be good, we'll see) and adding Oreos and Honey Stingers, I get 4,250 calories per day at 34.9 ounces, which is 122 calories per ounce.

I tried the Honey Stinger and GU gummies yesterday, I'm going to pass on those. The Honey Stinger gummies have as many calories as the waffle at twice the weight, the GU chomps taste a little odd and both are sticky, which I don't like.

The super-ultralight packers aim for 126 calories per ounce, so I'm not too far off, but they're willing to eat vegetable oil and peanut butter by themselves to reach that...I'm not that desperate yet.

Here's my revised list below, everything but dinner is eaten cold, can be eaten on the move and doesn't require extra for rehydration.

It's subject to some change, particularly for my hot meal to provide some variety, but I may not have much choice.

You can always get some small packets of olive oil and throw it in some of the freeze dried meals. Flavor plus calories and adds taste too. For hunting trips, I'm like you guys in that I want a quick breakfast that's has some staying power like oatmeal, usually with nuts and fruit like raisins or dates. I will say if I'm going to make a real breakfast, I highly recomend Ova Easy instant eggs. They will ruin you for any other powdered eggs. I can't tell them from real. Throw in some shelf stable bacon or chorizo and it can't be beat.

I will have to try the eggs. I have a bunch of 1 oz Olive oil and honey packets made that I throw in with each meal. They are easy to make with the vacuum sealer. I will post a pic.

Thanks for reminding me - now that I know about the straw trick, I can bring along some olive oil to throw in various meals - that's a good idea.

JMSZ did you try the Honey Stinger peanut honey energy bar @ 190 calories? It is good.
I was looking at those at REI last night...lower calories/oz than the waffles, so I decided to pass on them. They do look good, though.

Now that I've started paying attention to the caloric density (and now that I'm looking at carrying a 75+ pound pack), I've been following it religiously.

I'll probably go ahead and try one, if they're as good as the waffles, I'll probably end up taking some along, just to provide some variety.

I was looking at the Mountain House at REI last night, too, they actually vary pretty widely in their caloric density, so I may end up taking some along...the beef stroganoff looks pretty good.

I also noticed that their freeze dried ice cream has a lot of calories, so I may end up taking some of those along...

I too was really impressed with the density of some of the mountain house, but I was going cold food for sept after i thought about taking the weight of the stove and the fuel into hot food cal/oz. When we eat cold food it is gone from our packs. When we are done with the hot food, we not only had to pack the stove, fuel cans, and large packaging in but also pack it back out. I started putting alot less value on the stove when i took that and the space into consideration. You guys are a little ahead of me. I will try to get my food load worksheet done this weekend and see how it compares to what you guys have. I am afraid i am skimping on cals.

I like the MH meals. Most are two servings so I split them up into one serving bags. As far as the stove I like having hot meals and it is still lighter than bringing all cold food. The fuel tank is almost always empty or close to empty when coming out. I just have to have hot meals and they are fast to make.

I will likely come to the same conclusion after about 5 days of snack food. I will definetely be packing the MH in November when it is cold. I was going to use the hot weather sept hunt as an experiment. You have me thinking about the 2 servings per bag now. I may have missed that before. That may quickly justify the stove for me.

I'm only planning one hot meal per day, for dinner. I consider it a necessity in the cold weather, good for your body and good for morale.

I'm counting the two-meal bags as one meal, for eating and for calories.

Although Mountainhous' (MH) are 2 servings I can easily eat one package. Backpackers Pantry (BP) are 2 servings and they are 2 meals. I prefer MH over BP. BP is more organic, and every meal tastes like salad, not my cup of tea (or bag of food.)
