Hunting partner and I are heading to the San Juans for CO 2nd Rifle Elk season. We've drawn a cow tag, and we'll get bull OTC tags.

Can't wait for the adventure and big skies. We hunt whitetails and hogs in Alabama.

We've outfitted ourselves pretty well, but now its time to nail down a few details on the gear. I'll probably be asking info about base camp and travel essentials.

We're going to try to learn the land ourselves, so I don't see myself asking any geography or location questions.

Welcome NAH. A great tool is the CDOW hunting atlas if you haven't checked it out. Overlays are very useful when heading into an area the first time.

Good luck on your hunt. If you haven't hunted elk before, it is a tremendous job getting all that meat packed out. What have you got for packs?
Eberlestock Just One daypack for the first load. Slumberjack frame pack at base camp for the return trip(s). Partner is similarly equipped.

Hope we end up needing the frame pack! Still have to buy some game bags. Looking forward to the challenge.

Thanks! Yeah I really like the overlays. Am I correct in assuming they will be in the summer areas in 2nd rifle, and transition areas if there is snow?

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have the same hunt planned that a friend and I have planned. We are driving a Tacoma too. Good luck.
