Was looking thru the 2016 Small Game book and saw there was a new change in how HIP will be done. Not a big deal and in some caes might be easier than the old way but something was missing. I wrote CPW asking how this will work for folks who have a lifetime VA license since we do not buy a license each year. I'm still waiting on their reply.

» HARVEST INFORMATION PROGRAM (HIP)... will become part of the new licensing system this December. Hunters will do the HIP registration when they buy a small-game license from that point forward. Until then, the HIP registrations will be done in the traditional manner, either online or via live operator. The HIP registration numbers that have been given through the existing system up until that point will be “valid,” but a person purchasing a license after the new license system is operating will do the HIP through the license-purchase process only.

It should be no different than some other states do.

I have a lifetime hunting license for Utah which includes small game, but each year I am required to go on line or call to obtain my HIP number. So if you have a lifetime VA license I would be willing to bet that you'll just go on line once a year and obtain your new HIP number.

What I find funny about the HIP program is that while it was started by the Feds each state has different questions and requirements when you obtain your new HIP number. You would think that they should all be the same.

Just got my reply. In deed those with a Va lifetime license will need to go on line to complete the HIP survey. Just sounded to me as if the online/phone system was going away. I have to admit I was shocked at how quick I got a reply.

JimP, yes you would think the core would be the same but can see it being a little different from State to State depending on the type of wildlife in that state.

Thank you for contacting Colorado Parks and Wildlife with your question. The new Harvest Information Program (HIP) will be changing in December as you were aware of this, for customers who have a lifetime license you would need to go online at www.colohip.com to obtain your Harvest Information Program (HIP) number each year, as you have been doing so now. Once your lifetime license runs out of space to have your (HIP) number written on it we would change your license. We will have more details once we have everything set up. Please feel free to email or call me if you have any more questions. Have a wonderful weekend, take care.
