Hi. I drew a Nevada Elk 072, 073, 074 Late Any Legal Weapon NR Antlered Elk tag from 11/6 to 11/20/18 after 8 years of application.

I have hunted Utah, Montana, and South Dakota before.

Anyone hunt this unit and tag in NE Nevada before? Do you recommend backpack-type elk hunt in this unit? Go high and far late in the season?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe that area has a tendency to pile up with snow in the late season making access dificult. Maybe others have other info but that is what i have heard. Good luck, i drew archery bull tag in 061, 071 just west of you.

Bulls should be off by themselves trying to recoup from the ruts, dont get hung up on jarbridge that is a huge area with lots of elk but lots of preasure. Did I mention its a huge area ? Might look north east on the wilderness area in the roughest country you can find and cover lots of ground with your optics. Pray for some weather it can get the bulls moving.

I like to hunt the Jarbidge wilderness but it gets a lot of pressure nowadays. It could be hot and dry or have 3 foot of snow on the ground. And if it is hot and dry just know that it could snow at any minute. Any access can get you into elk but the pressure keeps them moving around. If there is no elk in an area one day there could be a hundred the next day. Getting in several miles deep is an option and can get you to less pressured elk but it can be dangerous due to the snow I mentioned earlier. Another good option is hunting the edge looking into the wilderness. Not just from access points but move along the edge where there is no trail head and find that forgotten drainage or pocket. This keeps you close to safety and roads but allows you to hunt the wilderness. Hope this is helpful. Fatrascal.

The snow can be deep and also push the elk down. That time of year I wouldn’t plan on a extended pack in trip but bring your gear. If The weather is good then you will have a leg above most that didn’t bring their gear.

There are some good elk in those areas. Good luck
