Well I'm going to be moving to clovis NM in less than 2 months. As soon as I have orders in hand (I'm Air Force) I'm going to potentially buy one do the leftover mule deer tags. I was hoping some of you who've hunted NM in the past could point me to the better units that still have tags available. Thanks.

Leftovers are leftover for a reason. I think you'd do better to pick a unit you think you might draw or be able to find a landowner voucher in and spend this fall scouting it for the 2014 season. Either that or get a colorado point, NM deer management has been pretty terrible according to everyone I've talked to.

Maybe some residents have a different take on it, but odds are so god awful for unguided non-residents everywhere in the state, I'm sticking with units I already know (16's and 30's) and if I don't draw out, well, to hell with em, I'll take my money back and head farther north. You couldn't pay me to spend a week in a "leftover" unit, not worth the gas money to drive around.

May try a crosspost in NM forum and see if that's gets you more run...

Thanks for the candid response. I might do some scouting instead. I will be able to put in next yr to draw as a resident thankfully.

Here's an idea for something you would have time to do if you bow hunt. NM has the past several years released December archery elk tags for units 34, 37 and 12 (nov). They are antler restricted to 6 points on a side and that hunt can depend a lot on snow conditions (if its crunchy you'll never get close enough), but absent paying to hunt private land, that'd probably be a hunt I'd look at in your situation.

Awesome advice. Do they just announce the release on the game and fish site and when do they normally make them available?

That's awesome. Would be a hard as hell hunt for the first elk hunt ever though!
