I need a Meriam and my wife needs her first bird. Haven't been turkey hunting in 15 years. Thinking about trying Nebraska but don't have a clue where to start. Any tips or areas to look at? Thinking next spring or 2018. I'm going to try and get my grand slam. I have the eastern and a rio. Thanks for any tips.

I live in northeast nebraska and the turkey population is great around here. There's a decent amount of public land and I'm sure you could get on some private ground as well. Up around Niobrara there is a Ton of turkeys. If you could get ahold of some landowners I'm sure you could have a great hunt up there. Pm if you have any questions would be happy to help.

I have hunted them all over the state- They are truly thick almost everywhere. Anywhere along the Platte or Loup Rivers will hold high numbers. I'm not sure how the Merriam distribution is in the south east part of the state (shorter drive for you) but we have plenty here just west of Lincoln. Most farmers seem to like responsible turkey hunters so access should be fairly easy. There are some larger public pieces west of Columbus NE on the Loup that hold great numbers of birds and have pretty light pressure in general. Just not many people hunting them here for some reason.

The counties in Nebraska, the ones we hunt, put out a landowner map book that is priceless. It has maps and landowner contact info. We bought ones for 2 counties then made phone calls and found all the turkey hunting access we needed. We also see lots of turkeys on the public access spots. Nebraska has more turkeys than people I think. Landowners are very friendly and nice and turkeys seem to be a problem with them or they do not really think of them as a cash cow. Our turkey hunts turned into deer hunting access because we are willing to harvest doe. Doe deer hunting will get you on a lot of places in Nebraska.

Glad I found this thread. After hunting private for 32 years, our farmer decided to let only his grandkids hunt. I'll be searching for a new Spot soon.
