Looking for some input on hunting the Thunder Basin National Grassland. I had a friend tell me once that he hunted in the grassland area and because it was grassland he could hunt every where. What I am reading is that there is some public with the grassland area but it's not all open to hunting. There only appears to be a small amount of public there. Thanks

I have not hunted it since 2005. To my knowledge all of the Thunder Basin National Grassland is open to public hunting. Obviously you need a tag for the unit. Some units have very little grassland & some have alot.

A BLM map with land status will solve that question.

I have a subscription to Hunters Trailhead. One thing I like about it is you can click on the map of a unit and get a general sense of how much public land is in the unit. It is a super cursory tool when looking for units with good public land access. On the other hand, you really need the right maps to make sure you have public access (such as a country road) accessing the public.

I have heard that there is public access on a good portion of Thunder Basin, but again, get the maps to verify you can access what you want to hunt.

There is quite a bit of public land on the grasslands. The coal mines are taking quite a bit of it from time to time. The one bad thing about hunting that is all the orange you will see. That place gets hammered with hunters.
