From the article

"Strong pleaded not guilty to the charges initially, he entered into a plea agreement this morning and was sentenced to 365 days in jail, with all but ten days suspended, he must serve five of those days, and if he completes 50 hours of community service before January the other five will be suspended."

So sentenced to 365 days in prison and will only spend 5 days in prison. Gotta love our "justice" system.

Compared to the punishments handed out up here, this guy got hammered. I wish Alberta would take a page out of wyomings book and start levying punishments equal to or harsher than this. Never could understand how anyone would even want to display a poached animal anyway, kinda like paying for a hooker then telling all your buddies you picked up a girl.

My girlfriend is a county prosecutor in a different county in Wy and she thinks the guy should have been hit much harder with fines, jail time and hunting ban.

Assuming that the hunting/fishing ban in Wyoming will be in effect in the other western states that are in the "compact". The problem I have is that lots of smaller towns in the west, plea bargin lots of cases to avoid going to trial, cheaper so they say. Both the county & cities where I live here in SW Colorado offer more plea bargins than trials.

IMHO this was just a small penalty to keep the public quiet. He should serve at a minimum the full time in the "pokey" and the full fine, in addition to seizure of the firearm and vehicle used in the poaching incident. He is a slimeball that stole this trophy from legitimate hunters.

How about a fine like this one. I hunted with this guy a few years before that. I was kind of alarmed when we just drove around into peoples fields. He made a comment that you can hunt wherever you want. That there was not trespassing laws.

Exactly!! That's what we need to see more of here. There was one outfitter in Alberta that received a similar fine, but that's the only large one I can think of in our province. Generally speaking, the fines are very small here compared to what I read out of America, and like you said trespassing isn't taken nearly as seriously. Trespassing is a big problem here, because without landowners rights to charge for access, it's largely unenforced. We own about 4500 acres, and I probably have to chase off at least 30-40 trespassers each season. You can call f+w, but they almost never respond.

Here is an example of a recent case in Alberta where 4 trophy bighorns were poached by 5 guys. Grand total $24k in fines (with all 5 combined) and each got a 1 year suspension. It's a complete joke. With punishments like that, there's almost no deterrent to risking it to get your ram. There's many cases of 1 poached deer like the original story, and the fines will total less than $1,000 and a 1 year suspension. We need to take a page from your guys book!!!

It was a plea agreement. Presumably the prosecution offered the deal and he took it. Would be interesting to know what the G&F thought about the deal. $9000 in fines plus losing his hunting privileges for 7 years seems to be a bit harsher than what most (Wyoming first time offenders?) get for similar offenses...

I agree 100% IDELKFVR. A lifetime loss of hunting privileges and a much higher fine and gun/truck/equipment confiscation, plus a year in jail would have been more appropriate in this case. I think he got a break because of his occupation.
