I was lucky enough to draw a Region E Muley tag for this October. Heading out with an outfitter and camping on or near Green Mountain.

Any advice, tips, or tricks for this area? We are getting out there a day early to scout and any input would be appreciated.

From what i have found out the terrain around Green Mountain varies greatly, not really sure where to start.

Also, looking to do some fishing while out there...any thoughts on that????

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the forum. If you don't mind, head over to the new members section and leave an introduction.

As far as your deer hunt goes- Let your outfitter stress the details. That's what your paying him for so he should have logistics and scouting all worked out. Preparation on your end should consist of lots of shooting practice and physical conditioning. Good luck to you and post pictures when you get back.

The whole reason of going with an outfitter is so you dont have to stress those factors like stated above. So hopefully they are well prepared and a good outfitter that will provide you with a quality hunt. The most important thing you can do as a client is be sure you are comfortable with shots upwards of 300+ yards in different scenarios where a "perfect" rest wont always exist. If you are proficient and comfortable with your gun, then you should have a great hunt and your guide will be very thankful as well to have someone who came prepared for their hunt.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I will be sure to head over to the new members section and say hi.

However, the outfitter, as far as i can tell is somewhat non-typical. He provides our group (3 guys) with a tent to stay in and a general lay of the land. I do not believe he is with us while hunting.

Long shooting is not an issue, physical conditioning may be (altitude???). However we will have a couple atv's with us as well as a 4x4 truck.

What type of weather is to be expected during that second week in October?

I saw some posts about snakes....are they a major concern?

Sorry if i come across as overly eager...just really excited for the trip and want to learn/research as much as possible before we get there.

Thanks again.

Sounds like you have more of a drop camp hunt booked.

Best advice I can give is to spend a lot of time behind binoculars and spotting scopes from vantage points. Mule deer can be very sensitive to pressure. Stay low impact as much as possible and let your optics find the animals from a distance and then formulate a stalk.

Weather can really vary. Plan for anything from 75 degrees and sunny to 10 degrees and a blizzard. If you stay a week you will likely see huge temperature swings.

Snakes shouldn't be a concern that late unless you get really unlucky.

Sounds like a drop camp style arrangement. I'd find out were I you, and if so, yes, some prework with contacts, maps, google earth, etc. would be in order. One would hope if you have a map, the outfitter would go over it with you. If I did not have a good map or gps chip or the like, I'd get one asap. At this time of the year, you may have difficulty with finding contacts available, many are hunting, patrolling or otherwise out in the field.

It is a drop camp hunt.

I have been toying with Trimble and Onx maps. Not sure which I like more. Any suggestions?

I will probably mainly use old fashioned map and compass but use the GPS to mark spots.

Just on our way home. 1 of 3 tags filled. Lots of does and fawns. Bucks were in the thick stuff. Need to walk the thick draws to have a chance.

Better luck best year.
