SD along the Mighty MO
I was wondering if anyone can give me a general area in MT where to look for a spot and stalk mule deer hunt. I will only be hunting mule deer if i tag out on my elk hunt. With this being my first out of state hunt and first elk hunt i kinda put all my attention on elk scouting.

I was leaning towards the South East part knowing its a little more open for spot and stalk on my way home from elk huntign in the NW. I have all the maps and got Block Management maps for units 1-5 and 7. I also was considering hunting along FT Peck, but realize there may be some winter kill. Not looking for an exact spot just a unit or county that numbers are decent and i can get a crack at one.

Thanks

I think that any where along the breaks would be great for the next couple of years. The winter was hard but the year has been great sence then. There has been more clover than I have ever seen so most bucks should reach pretty good sizes.

Thanks for the info, The breaks will proabably be tops on the list if i have time. I have been wanting to see them up in MT for a long time. (I live along the breaks here in SD).

Southeastern Montana would be great. I've never hunted the Breaks, I've heard there are good bucks there, but it is quite a ways from anything and I'm not familiar with the area. For next year, I would looking at hunting East of the Custer National Forest (after opening weekend, it gets pounded!), maybe securing permission on private land for good Muley Bucks.

I grew up in SW MT and if my buddies and I wanted to shoot a nice deer, we'd head all the way out to Southeastern MT (not that there's not good deer in Southwest MT but there's just way more deer in SE MT). Anywhere from Terry, Miles City, Circle, Broadus, Ekalaka, etc. has a shit-ton (yes that's a real measurement) of deer. Finding some block management on the way home and a day or two of hard hunting should turn up a nice buck. Two years ago two friends and I hunted a single Block Management unit near Circle and each shot a nice buck in three days (one every day). We had never been to this unit. We simply showed up, got permission, and GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK; there's a lot of great deer nobody shoots because people don't go after deer they can't see from the spotter in the truck. We did this in previous years between Miles City and Broadus and were just as successful. So even if you don't have a lot of time, a stop in SE MT might yield a very good deer. And as far as spot and stalk, that's all there there is in that country.

MSUcat61 has it,

Block Management areas all over Eastern MT have decent bucks available to hunters willing to put even a little bit of wear on their boot soles.
