Motel Recommendations Needed for Sheridan, WY

I've never been to Wyoming and next week we'll be in there hunting antelope near Sheridan. I'm wondering if anyone might be familiar with motels or any other options for lodging. We will also have a tent as we are considering staying at the KOA, or other campground if we find something we like. We're hoping to get into a motel if possible, but I'm a bit concerned that there won't be any vacancies when we get there.

The two places I always stayed at when working there were the Holiday Inn or the Best Western. Both good size places and was always able to get a room at one of them. There are several motels/hotels in Sheridan though so you should be able to find something to fit your budget/needs.

Sheridan is a remarkably convenient city. Lots of places to eat, shop and sleep. Each time I have stayed there it has been last minute and I always found a place. For the life of me I cannot remember the names, but one was a rat hole (it had an attached laundry mat, so it made up for the lousy room, plus it was really cheap...so I really cannot complain). Last year we stayed in a nice hotel that had a really good restraunt/bar. It was almost to nice of a place for us, as I caped out a couple deer in the room!

I would camp though and not at a KOA, maybe try to find a forest service campground in the mountains then get a hotel to clean up. The weather is looking decent, so take advantage of it.

We are hunting east of Sheridan, a long ways from the National Forest. So I'm not sure what the camping options are, other than possibly getting permission from a landowner to camp on their property. I suppose we could find some BLM, but there isn't much. There is more state land than BLM but I believe camping is not allowed on state land.

Gotcha.

Depending on what unit you are hunting, you could check into Lake De Smet. Im not sure if any camping will be open while you are out there but its worth a try. It is North of Buffalo and about 30 miles from Sheridan. One thing to remember about camping in WY, it can get really windy, scary windy at times.

If you do hotel it, I suggest getting online prices through Expedia, Kayak, etc. Then calling the hotel and asking what their "hunter" rates are. Some places really cater well to hunters and give a better discount.

being from Sheridan, this time of year I highly doubt you will have any trouble finding a place with vacancies. PM me if you need help on something specific!

I've stayed at the Hampton Inn several times and like it. Be sure to get a room on the west side. Since it is on a hill you can get a good view of the mountains.

The Rib and Chop house is an outstanding place to eat.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, it's been very helpful. Another thought that just occurred to me- would there be any advantage to staying in Buffalo instead of Sheridan? It's about the same distance to where we're hunting. I don't know, maybe it would be best if we wait until we get there to decide where we want to stay. I hate to make reservations at a motel that I know nothing about. Also, I should say, I'm looking to spend no more than $50 a night. Perhaps with a weekly rate we could get that for even a little less.

You may want to call around to some of the campgrounds and see if they have any rough cabins left. It's a little more economical than the motels. I have one in Buffalo for next week.

$50 a night is going to be tough but can be done. I would go ahead and find you a place now before you head out, at least reserve 1-2 nights.

Buffalo has some cabins in town, they are close to the National Forest office. I think it is called Mountain View Cabins on Hwy 16. The online price is $55 per night or $300 weekly (thats one bed only). Good sporting goods store in Buffalo, close to the Big Horns and I-25/I-90.

Just do a Google search of Sheridan, WY hotels and a bunch will pop up. There are a lot of national chain hotels there.

Okay, so through Expedia, we booked the first three nights at the America Best Value Inn for $59 a night (in Sheridan.) That's with two beds, and the rooms have a microwave and small refrigerator. Oh, AND free continental breakfast. So it seemed like a great deal. We'll still need five or six more nights in a motel but figured we'd see how we like it and move if necessary after the first three nights.
