Montana Mule Deer Hunt

Buddy and I are tentatively planning a mule deer hunt for 2018. We are acquiring points in Wyoming, but I think its wise to investigate other oppurtunities as well. We are also considering Montana. We are most likely talking rifle hunting, but we are also both bow hunters as well, so anything is on the table.

Can somebody give me a real basic rundown on how the license, draw, application process works in Montana for non-residents? Is there a point system for deer? I want to start gain points if possible to be better prepared for a 2018 draw.

What are the traditional/typical areas to consider when looking for mature bucks, say 160 or better? North, South, East or West? Are there good oppurtunities in the Missouri Breaks region for mule deer?

Any basic info you care to share would be greatly appreciated.

2018? Holy crap man. Go hunting sooner!

To get points in Montana, you have to apply for the license. You can't just buy a point and will have to pay close to $600 for the tag. Thus I wouldn't build points in Montana.

I would say buy points in Colorado. They have some big bucks and quite a few units that only take 1-3 points. Montana is better for just getting the general tag and having that as a last option. For a general tag though, MT has some great bucks.

I think you can just buy pts... like 50 bucks. But not sure we are the right state to try and build pts and then plan on drawing a trophy unit. We are on a lottery system here. But I guess its not a bad idea to have the pts in case it changed.

As of now you have a 100% chance at drawing a tag. I think the hunting is pretty good :)

Shoot me a pm and we can chat over the phone if Interested..

Montana has got a very convoluted system to get a limited entry tag so somebody correct me if I'm wrong here... I think the $50 point thing is ONLY for the "deer combo tag". In order to get into the limited entry units, you must first have that deer combo tag. Thus, you must first apply for and draw the deer combo tag. THEN your name will go into the limited entry units. The way I understand it, you can have points for the "deer combo tag" AND the "limited entry units." It is quite the system.......
