Hi there. Fortunately I drew a Montana General Elk tag. Unfortunately I didn't draw my elk permit for the third straight year. I decided it was time to elk hunt no matter what and have kept my general license. It's in my blood. I'm interested in any options anyone could help me out with in a general area for elk. I'm not lazy and am willing to put some miles on my boots. I'm looking at archery hunting in September when the bulls are bugling.I don't expect anyone to give me exact locations of their honey hole, but I am looking for some direction if possible. Thank you

Montana is very diverse. Kinda depends on your idea of a hunt. NW thick timber, east of divide open country. Western side is pretty rugged. Success can be had in any region if you put the work in. I recommend picking an area and commit to it. Don't spend your whole trip driving across the state. Use the night to locate them during bugle season.

I'm from Deadwood South Dakota. I've hunted several states for several years for elk. If you had one area that would be your choice for bugling bulls can you give me a general idea of where I should start. I will do my homework, just would like a little input if you don't mind. You can private message me if you'd like. Thank you in advance if you're willing to help.

John has excellent advice for you.

Note that the Region 3 districts have the highest numbers of elk and highest success rates for general licenses. You could throw a dart at a region 3 map and have good elk hunting in any district if you hit the rut right. Make sure to double check the district regulations.

Good luck!

I also agree!

Not familiar with that particular area. I would also recommend region 3 for open units. I can tell you for a fact there are quality Bulls even 10+ year olds, living in open units all across this state. They won't be easy to find or get to but that's how they get old.

What do you mean by open units?

missjordan. I was just reading one of your posts for 116 in Wyoming. I was wondering how your hunt went? I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and know people that live in 116.

John. Region 3 is a huge area. Have you hunted any of region 3? What type of landscape are we looking at? East of the divide you said is open country. What towns are we talking?

John. Have you hunted any of region 3 for elk? It's a pretty good size region it looks like. Can you give me a town to start looking for in Region 3 so I can call and get my research going? I know what you're saying about there are mature bulls living throughout the state and I do realize they're hard to get at. That's the challenge I like. I don't own horses, so I'd like to find an area I can access by foot. I can probably get my buddy to come along with his, but I'd rather do this from camp.

Probably was another forum member because I've never hunted wyoming before, but would love to someday!

I know where not to go and that is the Trout Creek area. Last time I went in there it was decimated by the wolves. It was my favorite spot to hunt but not so much anymore. Good luck!
