first off congrats! I have two questions
1. in 2013 there was one tag and 841 applicants did you get any phone calls with offers to buy your tag?
2. was it worth the thousands of dollars for a guide? just curious because I read about the guy from Riverside in 2011 that did his own scouting and saw sheep opening day.
grimsreaper,
1. California does not allow the selling of hunting tags. It is illegal. If I didn't want my tag, there were alternate hunters drawn. The tag would go to them. They don't want the tags up on eBay selling to the highest bidder.
2. If this had been any other year I might have given a DIY hunt a shot. I was told that a few years ago, there was quite a large herd of sheep in the Old Dads. Unfortunately, the pneumonia outbreak took out a large number of sheep in the zone. Somewhere around 60% to 80% of the animals died. Without a guide I would have been hard pressed to fill my tag. I live in Northern California, about a 10 hour drive from the Mojave. With a young family, and limited time off, I could not have done much if any pre season scouting. Only two of four hunters in the zone, harvested an animal. Both with SGWO. The other two tags were DIY and went unfilled. I don't know if you saw that the zone is now closed, and will most likely stay that was for many years to come. With that, I would say that for me, hiring a guide was the way to go.
