how do you make your mock scrapes?

rake out a large spot under a low limb... hang scent or drip it over the limb to let the wind carry it, and take a leak in the scrape.


My scrapes won't produce for a few days until there's not standing water in them, they've seen 11" of rain from yesterday & today.

He was old enough for me to shoot. He made it in the 140s despite antler damage making him miss out on about 16" of tines.

It's funny that after I wrote that I saw the pic of your buck on the ground. I guess he was big enough. Lol Congrats again packmule!

Only had 1 new buck show up and he's a 3yo with a lot of potential.

Had a cpl more show up for post rut.


This one is old as dirt, he's been injured the past 2 seasons and looks healed.

Have only had 1 more show up that's interesting.

There ought to be some new ones show up between now and mid-Feb as they start looking to group back up.

Its pretty easy to start a mock scrape. I clear out an area below a low hanging branch, usually an evergreen, along a field edge or to the side of a trail around August or September. I don't use any scent just the bare ground will get the deer to come over and check it out. Once one deer leaves scent there, every adult deer that walks by is going to rub that branch and leave scent, does and bucks. Its a great way to get pictures, but once the rut starts only smaller bucks seem to check the scrapes out frequently in my experiences.

My scrape has gone cold. Weird end to season, bucks haven't gotten back in bachelor groups and they've already started dropping antlers.

We are having an unbelievable winter. So far I think we are at 46 days with a temperature during some part of the day below zero. The record is sixty. We also have a lot of snow on the ground. There are zero tracks at this particular scrape, the deer are just trying to survive right now. The big one in my picture was in my food plot on camera an hour before light on opening day of our firearm season. He ended up getting shot by a neighbor that afternoon. I had him on camera all summer and fall, but luck went someone else's way. Oh well. I talked to a local outfitter and he said a lot of bucks still have their antlers on his properties as of this week.

We're colder as well this year. Had more snow in Jan than I've seen in my whole life here. We aren't under 0, but 20s @ 75-90% humidity kills most browse they had. I've got about 150 acres that the deer are flat out hammering on our place. It got taken over by some sort of invasive Chinese privet bushes when we clearcut it 7yrs ago and they're producing berries and leaf sprouts despite the weather. So much for global warming.
