I cant believe i missed the draw deadline! I am kicking myself, and i threw up in my mouth a little when i found out. I would love to still find a way to get out to CO to hunt high country deer with my bow during the early season. Any suggestions from anyone who has either been in my shoes before or any residents that can shed some light on areas that still hold decent deer populations and have tags available for the leftover draw. I have hunted 75/751 for the past 4-6 years so i would love to find something similar. Thanks!

There are a few units that will come up with leftover tags that you can purchase but the better ones will be all gone in the draws. The list will be out in June sometime and you can then take a look at it and decided.

I'd try and Google past draw/ initial leftover lists that may have been saved to the internet. Also double check that versus the hunts that have an * next to them in the Big Game Brochure. I'm assuming since you said you missed the deadline you actually will not get in on the leftover "draw" as they don't have an app with your name on it that has the " leftover draw block" checked. If that's the case in technical speak you are looking to pick up a tag off the " leftover" list when they go on sale Aug 2. That nomenclature will be key as you do your research.

As a general rule of thumb....no true archery tags will be available.....very limited muzzleloader tags will be available......fair amount of rifle tags available to go hunting but usually not in any high quality areas, that being said, its still hunting and getting out.

I just took a look at last years leftover tags and here are the units.

34, 38, 104, 107, 109, 110, 112, 116, 122, 128, 129, 136,143. Of those units the only one that I would even consider hunting would be 34 which is north of Glenwood Canyon. All the rest have a lot of private land in them.

There is a handful of others not mentioned above also.

There should be a few others but I didn't see any. In the Colorado Outdoors magazine they now list the units as left over if there are any tags left. I used to hunt 444 archery and there were always leftover tags but according to the magazine they are all gone in the second choice draws now.

Yes sir. That mag has bitten me before. Big difference between the magazine and the big game brochure IMO. ( from what I've seen, although same data base and comes from the DOW) I'm pretty sure the GMUs above/around Hot Sulphur Springs are still over population and there will be leftovers again for 18, 27, 28, 37, 38, 181, 371 ....just to name a few.

If you can take the risk, you can find a site that has tags listed, and monitor it until a week or two before the season starts. I didn't draw in any of the units I applied for in 2012, and didn't hunt that year. I swore that I would never let that happen again, so when I was shut out if 2014, I was able to score a CO landowners deer tag that allowed me to hunt the entire unit (some do, some don't), and was able to negotiate the voucher to $400. You still have to use the voucher to purchase the tag. I did a solo hunt in a wilderness area during the MZL season and scored on a decent buck. There are OTC hunts in other states or OTC elk hunts in CO that will at least get you back in the mountains.IMG_1641.jpg

Love seeing the solid animals in the sleeper units! Don't always need those limited tags for a great time! Congrats RICMIC

I took a look at the new format that CP&W is using for the PP and draw data and got dizzy before I figured out just how to look at it as far as PP's and the draw is concerned.

I'm glad that I am done chasing points in Colorado.
