Miscue on 270wsm velocity

Watching the show where Rinda is hunting Wyoming elk. Guy is explaining where to shoot elk with a lighter caliber rifle. In that segment he states velocity of 270wsm is 2160. It caught my attention and I replayed it over and over again to confirm what my ears were hearing. Sure enough it was 2160. So I thought maybe she was using a really short barreled rifle but it appears to be a standard Savage. Anyone else catch that or are my ears still deceiving me?

That would be one slow bullet out of a 270 wsm and would defeat the purpose of owning one.

Perhaps what he meant was 3160 which would be more likely.

My 270WSM ran a 140gr Accubond at 3033fps with a load a couple grains under max, where it shot best. I'd bet on 3160 also.

Possible, but I'd guess with Savage as a sponsor they could have come up with a lower recoiling rifle for her if that was the issue. Maybe steal Ike's 6.5 Creedmoor and be really picky on shot placement!

Yeah, I spent some time looking at commercially available reduce recoil loads, they still come in at ~2700 fps.

I even thought about a cut down barrel but it would have to be less than 10" to loose that much velocity.

Now with hand loads you could get down that low but then why use a WSM?

One thing to remember...if you reduce the loads too far, you get dangerous pressure spikes. I used to use reduced loads to blow out shoulders on brass for wildcat cartridges. I started blowing primers, that's when I found out about problems with reduced loads.

That is true on reduced loads and that is where they tell you to shoot reduced loads but not below what the minimum says in the book for blowing shoulders out.

I usually shoot the same amount of powder in my cases that I am fire forming that I use for hunting. I have also found that they are close to being just as accurate as my hunting loads are.

I thought about reduced recoil also but the way her hat flew off at the killing shot sort of convinced me it was just a miscue on velocity. Nice bull anyhow and I'm certain it didn't know or care about velocity.
