Maps for Antelope hunting

Planning my fist trip to Wyoming this year for an Antelope. Luckily me and buddies got drawn so now we are all kinds of excited. I keep reading through various post of how important maps are. Where is the best place to get them? We plan on hunting a lot of walk in area so I would like something I could see contour lines and good roads. I have seen a few website that offer some maps but they seem pricey and I don't know if I can trust them. Can someone help me out?

Buy a $3 BLM map, highlight the walk in areas, and bring a GPS with landowner chip. Verify on the counties website that you'll be hunting, what roads are actually public roads.

I really like the diyhuntingmaps.com for a printed map if they have your unit. The Wyoming chip in a gps is gold.

I'm going with a mix of OnX with printed county maps. I don't want there to be any question whether I'm on a public or private road. I've heard stories about outfitters and guides trying to intimidate hunters to get off what turned out to be public land. The biggest trick in many of these units appears to be staying on a public road until reaching public land and then staying on established 2 tracks. I want a GPS showing my exact location and be able to overlay that with a county produced map for the official county (public) roads.

Call the Newcastle BLM office on Monday and order one from them, 307-746-6600.

I work that area a lot. There are very few big bucks, so don't get hung up on shooting a middle of the road buck. You see a 12" buck or bigger, better be getting after him. The only area in the unit that doesn't hold much antelope is the SW, it's really rough canyon country. Get off the road and glass you'll do just fine. One disclaimer I was up there for 3 weeks last September working, and there were rattlesnakes everywhere, be on the look out. We killed a bunch with 6-9 buttons, one had 17 buttons. They'll ruin your hunt in a hurry

The BLM maps cost more than $3 but are well worth it. They show topography and land status. Use them with your chip, as the chips can be wrong. Lots of outdoor stores carry the BLM maps now up here. Also look at the county GIS for their maintained roads.

I like the DIY maps and the Off the Beaten Path maps, plus topo and BLM maps, whatever is available. I use a phone with OnX maps but especially when scouting a unit I like having the big paper map too. Batteries never give out on paper maps either.

Plug there are so many other uses for the paper maps such as emergency tinder for fire starting, along with TP if the need arises and you are out.

It is kind of hard to use a phone for either unless you phone is a Samsung that likes to catch fire.

My phone checked out on me last year when I was antelope hunting so I was glad I had the OnX map chip in my GPS also. I also like paper maps just in case
