Hey all . . . I'm starting to look for some mapping software to use hunting. While I'm sure there are a pile of options out there, the main thing I'm wanting to use it for is to print custom maps to take and laminate to bring along in the field. I've hunted a few new areas this year thinking I could just take my Garmin GPS and find my way around using it, and I was sorely mistaken. I've used the MapSource software to upload and download tracks to my GPS, but I haven't found it very useful beyond that. The absence of the terrain features really limits getting a feel of the land. Anyway, I was hoping to get some feedback on what you all have used and how you've used it. I appreciate the help!

I use a garmin gps with a micro sd card loaded with the 24k topo map that is labeled in "on the trail" section of garmins website. I live in Colorado so i bought the mountain central map. it covers all of colorado and utah. Before i had the map i could mark waypoints and use them to find my way back to places but the new map download was much better. With the topo map i can view water sources, depth of valleys, peak heights and other elevations. It made it possible for me to mark exactly where wallows, tracks and or sign i had found from scouting. I also liked the fact that i could take a gps coordinate of my exact backcountry camp and text it to my friend who then plugs it into his gps and can find me. The map is kind of expensive but i feel if your going to be serious about being in the woods its great to have.

I have a Garmin Venture HC, use the MapSource program with the 100k US topo map. IMO, it shows everything you could possibly need to navigate the wild. I had purchased the disk software at Cabela's but it doesn't look like they carry it anymore. You can get the topo map in the sd card format at Cabela's.

You could also look at getting a topo map from www.huntinggpsmaps.com. Then you would have the property boundaries in addition to the topography. Just a thought!

I also use base camp software with my wyoming map from huntinggpsmaps, and birds eye satellite imagery. I think the maps are way better than garmins and they have public and private land boundries. They also have elk, deer and antelope hunt area boundries. I have a garmin 62s with everyting downloaded on it and love it.
