Back in the mid 1950's the outdoor shows started. My Dad took me to one (I was about 12 or 13) and I remember seeing a presentation and short movie by Fred Bear. He was hunting Polar Bear and he had a guide with a rifle for backup. They shot a seal and Fred Bear wrapped up in the skin and laid down on the ice. Polar Bears feed mainly on seals and one of those huge white bears showed up looking for a meal and Fred Bear shot it with his recurve at 10 to 15 yards as I remember. That man had a huge set of cajones !!!

That looks like a smallish bear, perhaps one that mom ran off.

I also think that the man did the prudent thing, but he was lucky that the snowmobile started as fast as it did, but then I would imagine that it was all warmed up and that he was investigating a bear report or something along those lines. It also sounded like a shotgun, and unless it was loaded with slugs and the bear took a direct hit I'd be getting out of there also. Perhaps he was just shooting bean bag rounds. There is a lot missing in the story.

As for Fred Bear, I remember a interview that he did after arrowing a polar bear in the Arctic. He said that he would much rather hunt the bears with a bow when he is in close range to the bear. He said that when a rifle goes off the bear knows right where it came from and where to go to take care of the problem that was causing him so much pain. Where when they are hit with a arrow, they have little idea of where it came from since there was no noise. Providing that the shooter remains motionless if the bear is looking around.

sled was already running you can see the exhaust, he did not shoot at the bear , but towards the bear, i bet to get its attention. to me, he was trying to lure it away. as the commentary says, that guy has balls.
