Not sure if your count of 350 is accurate or not, but in N.E. LA, De Listing and hunting these animals is looong overdue. These are the most destructive animals in the woods, not to mention the negative impact they have on deer hunting. I hunt with a guy who had his ATV seat chewed to pieces by a bear. When he walked up to his ATV, the bear was sitting on his rear rack eating his seat. The Parishes (Counties in other states) of Madison and Tensas have more than their fair share of these animals.
Just my $0.02
The 350 is pretty accurate (hair/DNA samples...+\- 150 around Tensas/ 50 Pointe Coupe/ 100 St Mary....with some young juvenile males being pushed out roaming for their own new home range, which is normally in the corridor USFWs/ldwf/ private land owners have been working tirelessly to create (old crop lands back to hardwoods) in order to promote bears to spread out and exchange genes, reducing the risk of bottle neck syndrome. They're just very concentrated in the areas they're in. I can't wait for LDWF to eventually begin a lottery hunt (I'm praying I can get a tag) which is a long term goal.
Y'all are probably right, I'm just a little leery of folks shooting/poaching any bear they see that goes by there feeder since they're "not protected " anymore. Years ago I worked on the black bear project and had 4 bears that I helped catch and monitor (radio neck collar/telemetry) receive mortality signals due to being shot by poachers.
In saying that, ive already been talking with buddies that own land that we see bears on, to give me permission to hunt on their property if I can magically be a lucky one who draws a tag. My fingers are already crossed haha.
