I know Im new to hunting in the mountains but I just cant stop dreaming about it.

Im looking for partners to hunt in this area. So far my plans for this fall involve me solo and id love to have some help as much as id be willing to help another.

A true hunting partner would be great but im even looking for others that will be in the area and willing to help each other out. I will be scouting all I can and would be more than happy to swap info with another. I will be scouting north of Alma, and all around the Heeney area (so far that's the plan).

Would never still something out from under someone and would rather build some trust and relations that can be used in the future.

Hunting plans are to Muzzleload hunt Mulies and rifle elk. (working on my archery shooting)

Its just big damn country and I don't think the Air Force will give me the time off to glass it all.

I lived in that area quite a few years back and have hunted it a bunch. It can be really great mid week and sometimes really annoying on the weekends with the big crowds up from the city. I don't hunt it anymore so I can give you some basic directions if you shoot me a PM.

So after the tips from skibum and talking with some locals I've changed my plan. Instead of hunting muleys with the muzzle loader I'm putting in for the area 28 (28,37,371) either sex elk ML tag. 2nd choice will be the cow tag to match. I will now be putting in for a muley rifle tag just haven't put that plan together yet, oh and I want to squeeze speed goats on there some where.

Keep the advice coming. Will start scouting 37 on foot in April.

I have a friend who is accumulating points and hunts those areas archery each year. I hunt it 2nd season or sometimes 1st rifle. He always tells me that if he used a muzzleloader he could have shot several bulls. As it is, he usually gets an elk with his bow.

Your 0 points for an either sex muzzleloader tag are well spent if you chose this area. It blows me away how some other units take so more points, but have far less elk.

Well if you ever need any help out there let me know. I can look at maps and Google earth all I want but I won't know much till boots are on the ground.

Matt,
Double check your hunt codes there. I'm pretty sure for ML 18/181 are on one tag and 28,37,371 are on another for the either sex tags.

All the best.

I live out in Heeney and have hunted out around here a little. Only been in state a little over 3 yrs. and due to work and family haven't been able to put in the time I'd like to, but might be able to help with some info about the area you'd like to know. I also only archery hunt. Pm some question and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

I appreciate the offer sir and I will ask any questions I come up with along the way.

Will be doing my first scouting trip the last weekend of April. Im not sure I should really call it scouting since I don't know how much on foot ill be able to do. Primary reason will be driving up to become familiar with the area and roads.

Do a on line search for it and then go through the retailers that come up that stock it and you might find one that is cheaper.

Or go down to your local Sports Authority on or after Thursday and see if they are dropping the prices of the firearms during their clearance sale.

Sports Authority is bankrupt and they couldn't find anyone to purchase them or that was willing to pay what they wanted them to pay for the stores and name. According to the news the sales start on Thursday the 26th and will go until they close the doors.

I guess that paying a few million every year for a name on a sports stadium isn't all it was cracked up to be.
