The question is a brand new unopened pair of leupold gold ring 8x42 hd binos for $300 or and slightly used pair of vortex viper hd 10x42 binos for $400? To be used for general hunting. Both seem like a heck of a deal..

Never tried the Leupolds but I got some Viper 10x42s this year and frickin love em. Not sure what the warranty is like on the Leups but the Vortex lifetime warranty will transfer to you even used so that's another big plus.

Does Vortex have the same warranty on their scopes & red-dot's?? Just wondering.

I would go with the Gold Ring, if you're okay with 8x magnification. I did not like my Vipers.

I believe the Vortex warranty is on all products.

It pretty much depends on how much you want to spend. I think for the 100 dollars more the Vortex is worth it also because of the warranty. Although Leupold makes great glass so either way you can't go wrong. You'll probably get more bang for your buck with the Vipers.

Those Golden Rings were some of the best bino's ever made in my opinion, I'd go with them over almost any Vortex bino made. The Golden Rings were a $900 when they came out and they are every bit as good as some of the higher end bino's. Just my two cents but its apple to oranges.

I agree with Woodtick. Leupold will stand behind any of their "gold ring" products in my experience so the warranty is a wash. I don't know about the binos, but comparing leupold vs vortex rifle scopes that I have, the leupold glass is head and shoulders above vortex, while vortex gives you more features in comparative price ranges. If either of these binos are better than what you currently have then go with your gut cause they're both good deals.

Vortex warranty is great. Works even if you drop them. And it's transferable. I made the switch to vortex and love the rifle scopes, spotting scopes, and binocs.

Leupold's warranty is in no way comparable to Vortex's warranty. I also think the Razor's are better than the Gold Rings regardless of the warranty.

I bought a leupold vari x III 3.5-10x40 in 1991 and put it on top of a 7 mag the same day. I have drug that rifle all over and killed untold number of deer with it. Last week the reticle came loose in that scope and turned about 1/4" to the right. I called Leupold and told them the problem. They said send it to us, we will fix it or replace it. No questions asked. I haven't got it back yet but I am impressed.

That said, I just bought my first vortex as well. A pst Viper FFP. So far it seems top notch.

I just simply prefer the 10 power over the 8 powrr myself. I think you would be happy with either brand. If your consistently looking farther than 100 yards the 10 power is the way I'd go.
