So I am starting to already have those sleepless nights dreaming of big Muleys! We have made a run to South Dakota (the secret gem) the last few years in early October. This year we are going late October to see what happens. We found the last two years when the deer are so grouped up that we have a hell of a time getting in without getting busted. Last year I had on two occasions Ten to fifteen bucks all bundled together and even whitetails hanging close by. Anyway I would be interested in others thoughts on going late October. Things I need to think about? We buy a muley or whitetail tag but focus on Muleys unless we get into a monster whitetail.

Can't speak for SD specifically but the Wyoming area we hunt definitely has a difference later in Oct. The bucks get into pre rut and start hanging out near the doe groups. The hunting is much better even the last few days of Oct.
I would look for doe groups and see if a mature buck is staging up to be near the doe when they become deceptive.
By late Oct. we see the mature bucks start to get solidary and not hang out with their younger friends near as much.
SD is much farther north though so some guys up there hopefully will chime in.

We had similar experiences in Montana when we used to travel there. One year we did the same. We waited until the rut. The bad news for us was all the Muley bucks bailed out of the area where they spent their early fall time to find those in heat does in other areas. I hope it's not the case for you, but you may want to consider that as a possibility. We were limited by the ranch we were hunting. We did score on several whitetails, though.

Can speak for a general area in Wyoming, right now big bucks are coming out of nowhere. The last couple of days have been very interesting, big mature bucks showing up with doe groups. This is a great time to hunt. Some small state sections are producing nice bucks.
