Plan to be there. Bring two friends that are totally new to the west. I caint walk very far so I guess I will point. What would be most memorable for the beginners?

Different for everyone- Just take your time and enjoy being there.

Take time to turn out all the lights at night and look at the stars. It is amazing up there with no light pollution and very clear air. My wife and kids still bring up the stars when explaining the mountains to someone.

Good point Hilltop!! Elk camp means more to me each year that passes!! Seeing or getting an elk is ok... and every time you are cooking a chunk of elk meat during the years your mind flashes back to the hunt. But overall, memories of elk camp are what is special to me. I'll be there a few days before the opener ...... Lord willing!!

no. what matters is the ability to put the projectile of choice where you want it when you need to

I never have paid any attention to the moon phases or when the sun comes up.

I have always figured that it is hunting season dictated by the DOW and I have to hunt in the time frame that they have chosen for me to hunt. I doesn't matter if it is a full moon, new moon, half a moon, or no moon I'll go hunting. Same with the weather. Rain, snow, or whatever you will find me out in it. Granted with the weather sometimes it is best to let the storm pass but if you can only hunt the days that the hunt is going on you just need to go hunting.

I prefer a darker moon phase but I will hunt all of them. Mid September is the time to be chasing elk regardless of the moon phase. Good luck to all headed out soon.

there are times it is wise to let the storm pass but I have killed several in some pretty nasty weather. was it wise to be out in it? probly not. was it worth the risk and suffering? absolutely!
