Lander Area Question

Just got done with a couple phone calls trying to figure my 1st antelope hunt next year. Just doubling checking the information I got was correct.

1. There are no areas around the Lander office for second choice buck tags
2. If I drawl a doe tag for 1st choice I lose my points for buck tags
3. There are no second choice doe tags available around Lander area.

My goal for this hunt since this is my 1st time planning a out of state hunt is to put my dad and a couple 1st time hunters(kids) on a few bucks. Size doesn't matter and also would like to get a few doe tags. If we have to drive between areas that's fine. Just trying to figure it all out and put a good fun hunt together.

I will be calling the other offices to get as much info as possible. I have the eastmans book to break down stats also

Thanks

Your PP don't come into play with a doe/fawn antelope tag. When you apply for the doe/fawn tags you can check a box that says withdraw my application if full price tag is not drawn (Full price tag is your buck tag). Just look on the draw odds on the Game and Fish web page and you can find out all the info you want about 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice tags.

Good luck, and God Bless!

Why are you sticking to one area? I think few hours of driving can give you more options. I was driving 18 hours last year to hunt antelpe in WY, that was fun hunt, planning to go back.

I talked to a different person at another office and they explained the doe tags so I am good to go on doe tags. The problem that I am running into which I am sure everyone else has is building points and still finding areas to drawl as a second choice and not run into private land issues. I have read up on everything and studied the odds and know that I can't have it both ways. There are only a handful of second choice tags that I can drawl and everyone is listed as public land issues. Now I have to figure out what is real and what is not on the private vs public. I am not looking to shoot one off the road. Getting out and hunting is what I want and don't mind walking. I just need access to public land and I can go from there. There are three or four units that look possible but reading the net has me mixed on the land issue
Thanks

The only reason those units have leftover tags is because of the access issues. How hard or easy a tag is to get is mostly related to public land and access.

I'm going to second what Musket Man wrote regarding the access.

If you are willing to get a GPS and land ownership info (chip or download) - then you can hunt a unit with limited public access, but it is a real bear to try to hunt one of these units without it.

There are a few ranchers in the Riverton and Lander area that will give access for doe harvesting. Folks with irrigated fields are the best bets.

I guess the question is why are you limiting to the lander area? Or does it have to be the lander area?

I hunted GMU 66 east of Lander for rifle antelope in October 2015 and killed a respectable buck on the second day of my hunt. There were plenty of 12-13 inch and a few 14 inch goats running around and I believe I could have killed a buck in many places in the unit since it is full of public land. I will warn you that it takes about 5 preference points to draw the unit. If you happen to draw this unit, I would be happy to share some tips with you.

I am sorry if I was not clear at the start. The reason I posted about the Lander area was they were the 1st office to pick up so I started talking to people without doing my research 1st. Once I got everything printed off and started highlighting areas I figured out some big questions.

1. In order to keep building points and still hunt next year I am pretty much limited to the north east corner or around the casper area.
2. If I decided to go this route any build points I am going to be in units that are very limited in public access

So with those choices is it worth/possible to do a good left over area. I know I will have to study maps, buy the chip and start talking to people. My concern is I am taking my dad and two young 1st time hunters. I don't want them to be turned off on hunting out west by not being able to find some areas to hunt and animals to shoot at.

Thanks for any help

Lots of oportunity in wyoming for a hunt just like your looking for. You will find tresspass ranches in the north east part of the state. There are also some tags that can be drawn on a second choice so you can still build your pts. If I can help Pm me.

As long as you do your research and are sure of the boundaries the limited access areas you will have a good time. There is game there, just gotta work a little bit to ensure you don't trespass unknowingly. Some folks might let you on their place too, just have to talk to them. We had a guy offer us access to his place while we were pumping gas. We just happened to strike up a convo at the pump!
