I agree that they are capable of building good quality in areas in which they have sufficient expertise and clothing is certainly one of those.
I'm not sure why you brought up the subject of freedom and even asserting that they have more freedom than we do. They certainly lack the rights that we do.
Here is a summary list of freedoms we have in the Bill of Rights.
Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
Right to keep and bear arms.
No quartering of soldiers.
Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.
Right to due process of law, freedom from self-incrimination, double jeopardy.
Rights of accused persons, e.g., right to a speedy and public trial.
Right of trial by jury in civil cases.
Freedom from excessive bail, cruel and unusual punishments.
Other rights of the people.
Powers reserved to the states.
I don't think China is doing too well on any of those basic rights.
In addtion, their political system ends up with enforcing a (poorly) managed economy that meets the desires of politicians and has been full of corruption and graft rather than allowing freedoms to have a free market, though there has been gradual improvement. They have restrictions on currency (on how much of it they can send or spend overseas). They had until recently a horrendous one-child policy in which mothers found to be pregnant again were dragged off screaming to undergo forced abortions. They subordinate health to economic growth with the result that the air in many cities is extremely unhealthy. There is almost no intellectual property protection. I could go on.
Yeah, so we are not doing so well on reserving powers for the states, our right to bear arms is under attack and political correctness is putting a damper on free speech and freedom of religion and of parents.
But, we are still way, way ahead of China in freedom and prosperity. And, if we will stand up and fight for what is right, we have the ability under our system of government to save our freedoms and continue to live as we wish.
If we don't remain the greatest country in the world it is not because we lack a political Constitution that guarantees essential liberties but that we lack the personal constitution to fight for what is worth fighting for.
I'll take that scenario any day over living in China.
