Was completing some applications this morning, putting in for points, etc, since my fall is basically already full. Decided to peruse the Kentucky elk page, and came across this gem of an explanation as to why KY does not use a bonus/preference point system, and instead has opted for a pure random draw.

https://fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Documents/examinationofelkpreferencepoints.pdf

137 years, to get through the ground floor point applicants, if they were to institute a preference point system.

I havent checked the math, but I think my wait for a rifle hunt in the NW corner of CO is actually longer than that.

I have a brother working for Kentucky game & parks and he puts my name in each year. Real long odds, but it?s nice of him to do that. I think it?s $10 to apply.

I dont get in for this very reason.

Its like drawing the PA tag.

Although I know a guy who drew it and killed a monster in PA...It wasn't a fair hunt. The elk were not scared of him.

I put in for the 4 taqs available every year (archery bull, archery cow, rifle bull, rifle cow). Its cheap to apply and I don't mind helping with one of the most successful elk reintroduction's ever conducted.

I drew a bull rifle tag on my first try! I get to start trying to draw again this year. Hopefully my luck holds and I go two for two.

Even with the bonus point system your odds in drawing a tag are extremely unlikely in PA.

KDFWR advertises heavily for the elk draw but have cut tags the last couple of years. There is no question that the herds are less visible now and make for a challenging diy public land hunt.

I certainly hope the program succeeds but it seems like large private property is where most of the elk now live.
