I've made the commitment, now to commit my mind ...

I've decided to run a full marathon the last weekend in April in Oklahoma City. I've ran a couple half marathons without training a lick, and managed to run them without any major issues. The last one I ran was in 2012 again in the Oklahoma City Memorial marathon. There is no way I can do this run without training.

I turn 40 in August and thought I'd give myself a goal prior to the big event.

The toughest problem I have is my work requires a lot of travel. There are 14 weeks until the event and I already have 7 weeks of travel already scheduled with likely a couple more thrown in there as last minute things arise.

I could use a bit of encouragement from you good folks and I hope to check in with my progress as things move along.

Anyone wanna join me?

Thanks,

Graybird

Will do. Hotel staircases and treadmills may be your friend.

Good luck with the training! I know what you mean about travel, it throws a kink in a regular routine!

Good luck to you graybird. I quit running many years ago after knee surgery I had after screwing it up chasing a big Tom. It has never been quite the same since and running on it made it hurt. I ran a marathon once and only once when I was in my twenties. I have had a great admiration for anyone that runs the long distance's because it kicked my butt! Have fun!

I got 7.75 miles in this morning. The wind was a kicker. I was running 10 min miles with it at my back and 14-15 min miles when going into it. I picked a new route today and had a total of 1847 ft elevation change.

Good work G.B.
I am training for 1/2 marathon myself. I've never run a race and the goal, even if I do not enter, gets me in shape/healthy, and ready to take on the mountains this fall. I to did 7 miles this morning. :)
I've got your back bro. Good thing with running, is you can do it anywhere unlike most other workouts and sports.

Remind me not to go with you guys to bear country. I would be left way back in the dust for the bear. I agree with Iron Mike, the distance running is impressive.

It's a good run Graybird. I did it in 2012, and the half in 2011, which was brutal...(39 degrees and raining). I wish I had your level of commitment right now. Just keep running and it'll take care of itself. Once you get into the training routine, it will become habit.

Are you using a training program? I used Hal Higdon's. One thing about the full versus the half is all the dang bridge overpasses. You would think they aren't that big, but they look like mountains.

Also don't go out too fast. I ran the first 16 at about a 7:50 pace(which I thought was ok as I was 10 to 15 seconds slower than my half marathon pace), then the last ten at 9:30....lol. Felt great, then just hit the wall. Still my only marathon to date. Right now I'd be lucky to hit an 11 minute pace...gotta get off my butt.

Good luck.

I am on a training program. Don't remember what it is off the top of my head. The program has me running 4 days a week with long runs on the weekend. During the week they aren't bad at 4-5 miles each.

I'm hoping the training at higher altitude in Colorado will help when I get to OKC.
