Well, a while back I found a moose outfitter in Ontario. Turns out he has a 5 -8 year minimum waiting list for his 3 tags a year. Got an email today offering the tag, fully outfitted (but unguided) for under 2k. Plus it's only a 13 hrs drive (yes drive) from home.

Told him I'd take it but he gave me a week to decide. Bout 40%success on bulls with a bow. I've talked to several references not a bad word to be said.

With gas rags food and permits I'm thinking right at 4k.

What do you guys think? Jump on it or hold out for a more expensive higher success hunt?

Why wait. You seem excited and if you have the money do it. I never regret a hunt as long as I have done my research.

Personally, I'd jump on it. 40% seems good for a bow hunt and I'd be willing to bet you have the skills to tip the percentages your way even more. Besides, what a great adventure to go on!

That sounds like an inflated success rate. Moose hunting with a bow is not an easy thing. Check with references before you send any money.

If you have the money to spare go for it! If it were a sure thing it wouldnt be hunting and atleast you will be hunting moose instead of just thinking about it like most of the rest of us!

Deposit is in the mail. Thanks for shove to go for it.
My pause was that I expected several more yeArs to research and plan. This is cheap enough for a shot at a moose and some killer fishing. Let the planning begin!

Buy the best rain gear you can afford, especially for getting thru the willows after it rains or snows! I bought KUIU's best and they were worth it on and off the horses and walking thru the willows!

Thanks! That's definitely on my list for this trip. I have a ton of badlands stuff and love their warranty so Ill probably try to get their raingear. Kuiu is great stuff too!

I think ive watched every youtube video on moose hunting, lol. Any books or videos anyone recommends?

Not sure of the terrain you'll be hunting be mine had mountains so everyday we rode up or to a glassing point and we glassed. I learned a lot about using a spotter that will be put to the test in Montana. Glass with bino's , anything big a black the spotter comes. When my guide called to a moose it wasn't load like seen on Jim Shockey. My shot was 60 yards or less in the neck. Down goes Frasier! Just take the four quarters, backstraps and loins, gutless. Separate the meat from the carcass 50/60 yards, bears seem to like the carcass better.

Find cows and most likely you'll find bulls! I'm not sure what's legal where you'll be hunting but in northern BC a legal bull was either 3 brow tines on one side or 10 points on one side. Also the length of a point must be longer than it's width! Be careful of drop tines too, most we observed were Not connected to the brow tine! I hunted two bulls hard because of the drop tine but when we got a good view of them thru the spotter they didn't have the 3 brows or add up to ten points! Also checkout Pristineadventures.com , they sell the caribou game bags, which I bought a set of six moose bags $79. It's a good savings.

Sneaky peak. Pristine adventures sells tag bags. Just as good if not better than caribou bags. I would order gunthros moose hunting DVDs. They are expensive but worth while. It teaches you how to moose hunt. I would talk to the outfitter on what he recommends for gear. Is this a fly in hunt?
