:DHello Eastman Forum Members,
I have posted a few time previously but have never really introduced myself. Lived most of my life in S. Calif. but moved to N. Calif. four years ago. Found a great spot for my hobbies of hunting and fishing in Shingle Springs (thirty minutes East of Sacramento and twenty minutes from where gold was discovered.
Taught Physical Education for forty-six years and officiated high school football, basketball, softball, and baseball for thirty-seven years; my whole life has been associated with athletics. Hence, the nickname "Olref"..."NOT OLD Ref"!!!! LOL!!
Have hunted Wyoming for the last five years (1) Deer Areas 131 and 82, (2) Antelope Areas 90, 91, and 92. (3) Elk Area 30. Successful in all except for Elk Area 30.
This year was drawn for a Cow Elk tag in Area 32....have never been there before. Called the Game Warden and Biologist for the area, both said highest rate for success would be during the bow seasoln (all of Sept.). They indicated there were elk in this area but when rifle season opens (all of Oct.) they head for the Wyoming/Colorado border, near Colorado Area 201.
Any help from members who have hunted or just been in Area 32, would greatly be appreciated!!!!
A big THANK YOU to Umpqua Hunter for his help in the past!!!!
Good Luck to all of you during the hunting seasons from Sept. to Nov.
Sincerely,
Olref (aka: Doug)

Hello Oleref, Welcome to the forum. The biologists and warden you spoke to were right on with there information. There are a ton of elk in the Unit during september. Bowhunting is amazing down there, but as soon as the rifle shots start going off. The elk head for colorado and don't come back. It is a very frustrating part of this hunt. Let me know what else I can help you out with. Very familiar with the unit.

I hunted 32 many years ago. Lots of elk - filling a cow tag shouldn't be an issue. I'm not as familiar was hunterman probably is... But I would 'second' that once the rifle hunt starts there is a mass migration south of the border. There are a few locations that locals are familiar with where hunters actually sit on these 'pressure driven migration paths' to ambush elk going across. If you hunt towards the north of the unit the affect isn't as bad (in my limited experience).

I'd be interested in reading some feedback on your area 30 elk hunt... Did you have bull tag or another cow tag? How was the hunting pressure?

When did you hunt 30? I'm also interested in your feed back. That tag used to be a slam dunk hunt but have heard negative reports the last 2 years. When do you plan on hunting 32? I'll be out scouting for deer next weekend, I could run over to pine mt and let you know what I find.

Hello PointsHunter and SSliger,
THANK YOU to both of you for your responses and input. I sent a PM to Hunterman2164 thanking him, as well. I know NOTHING concerning Area 32 and plan on being there approx. Sept. 23. As I mentioned, both the Game Warden and Biologist indicated "A lot of elk, there";where...... I have no idea. Biologist said to try Canyon Creek off Hwy. 430. On the BLM map, Canyon Creek looks like it has ALOT of roads available but I don't know what the land looks like....flat, hilly, etc. He also mentioned Red Canyon Bandlands (N/W of Pine Mt.), South side of Pine Mt., Tee Pee Mt., Richards Mt. and Elk Butte. At this time, these are just names to me. They both said that the rut should be in effect approx. the third week of Sept. (that's the BEST news I've heard so far concerning Area 32...LOL!) I don't like to track (regarding archery season), that's why I was hoping to hit the jack pot and hunt during the rifle season.
Concerning Area 30: I had drawn a cow tag for the 2011 season. Hunted solo for eleven days saw ONE bull elk and NO COWS!!!!!!!! Hunted Little Firehole, Middle Firehole, Flattop Mt., and Dry Hollow area, all the way down to the northern border of Area 31; on advice from others, never hunted on the East side of Hwy. 191 and/or Miller Mt. On occasion went out with friends from Rock Springs who had drawn a cow tag. One evening, with them, right at the end of legal shooting time, saw a herd of easily OVER 100 elk on Little Mt.!!!! My friends told me that quite often they've seen elk crossing Hwy 191, coming from Area 30 running into Area 31.
Again, ANY INFO. on Area 32 is really appreicated. Also, ask more specific questions, if you have them, regarding Area 30. SSliger, any "Bird Dogging" you could do, would be GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rut is on. I was on Miller mountain today scouting antelope and my kids and I watched a herd bull bugling his head off and chasing cows for about 20 minutes. I know that doesn't help you much with area 32 but at least it might give you a better since of timing on the rut action out here. Good luck with your hunt! Post up some pics when you get back.

Should be the same story in 32 a few miles to the south!

Find you an elk yet olref?
Thank You for the inquiry! Due to my wife having been ill for the last two months, my Wyoming hunting trip had to be put on hold. Originally, I had planned to leave Sept. 20th to take advantage of the archery season...everybody had indicated this would be the best time to score. She has recently improved to the point that I'll be leaving tomorrow, Oct. 5th. Being able to go hunting anytime is fun in itself; hunting elk during the rifle season will now be more of an "experience" than possibly being successful....but that's hunting! So many members on this forum have helped me form a "game plan" when previously I knew nothing about this particular area and/or how to hunt it.
Have deer tags as well which opens Oct. 15, in Area 130. Will report back, hopefully with more than an "experience" later in October.

Good luck to you. I just returned home from helping a buddy fill a tag down there and I got mine there in Sept. Hunterman was definitely right about rifle season. There were lots of people hovering around the border as soon as rifle opened and pushed quite a few elk south. There is lots of water down there so I think that will help you find them in the lowlands as it did for us this last week. We found bulls in places that had ATV's driving by on a pretty consistent basis (thank goodness they don't ever stop and look around). Good luck to you and let us know how it goes.

Hello elkhunter1983,
Good info. concerning what's been happening recently in that area. Congratulations on your success during archery season!!!!! Have heard that it's rained off and on so the roads around Pine Mt. could really be a mess; have a quad so that will help. Sent you a PM (Private Message) so please sign in and read.
Again, THANK YOU for the above update!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Olref

Currently in Rock Springs. Started hunting Pine Mt
Oct.7.Hunted five days and saw northing. Came in from every possible route, still nothing. Last Sunday heavy snow storm that even getting out by quad was tough. Decided upon a change of scenery and went to Farson for two doe deer on private land only. Sounds like a "Slam Dunk",,, NO!!!!
You and the doe have to time it so both of you are at the same place at the same time...not across the fence from each other!!!LOL!! Somehow got two yesterday;one at 360yd and the other 375 yds; longest before was at 290. They were so far away that when I missed they never ran off!!!!! Am going back to Pine Mt. and try the Red Creek and Teepee Mt. areas as some forum members suggested. It's really neat to actually see the places that members have mentioned. Hopefully, more good news will be coming!!!
