I know my post for some info is etremely specific to GMU 82, especially to a brand new forum. But I was hoping to get some info/tips on hunting that area due to a lack of scouting time because I am lucky enough to be a first time father of a baby boy named Elkan. I might be able to go scouting once or twice with work and family time thrown into the equation. I was hoping someone has already hunted this area with this tag and has some helpful hints on locations to be able to get away from other hunters. The tag is an above treeline tag, so it won't be an easy hunt. Anybody with that kind of hunting experience that would like to give some helpful knowledge would be greatly appreciated. thanks and happy hunting!

You can access the high country from 86 on the westcliffe side, head straight west out of westcliffe up to Hermit Peak. From there you can go north or south, once you drop over the ridgeline you're in unit 82 but anything you take you'll have to pack out.
There's some good hunting up there, and with the road being a little rough you can get all the way to the top.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give the DOW folks a call and see what they could tell me too. It's a beautiful area and can't wait to get up there. Happy hunting!

This is actually the first time I have ever written one of these things. Thanks for helping me break my forum virginity
Anyway, I grew up in the san luis valley and spent the whole summer before college backpacking the sangres to scout for the same high country buck hunt you're going on. The reason I came across your post was I was researching the unit again for a possible hunt next year. I just need one more point I think.
I hunted in '03 and got a decent 4 point after a whole week of hunting with no visibility as a storm rolled in opening day and didn't leave until the day before the season ended. This buck was the first one I saw that morning. He rolled a 100 yds down the mountain messing up his nice pretty velvet
This was actually one of the smaller bucks I had been watching all summer. There were atleast 7 or 8 larger bucks than him in the area. Including a 35" 4 pt. and a 9 X 12 30" non-typical. The stuff I have dreamed of ever since.
I don't know if it was the ignorant guide that camped on the same ridge the night before the opener or the crazy weather, but I saw those bucks on that ridge every day until the opening day and then they were gone. I noticed that they did start to rub their velvet and had another theory that they moved down into the valley to rub their antlers, but it was really hard to know since visibility was less than 100 yds. for the whole week.
All that to say, I wanted to see if you might be interested in swapping some info. Since I live in northern colorado now, I can't get back down there to check out some of my old hunting spots. So I was thinking I could fill you in on where I used to find them in exchange for an update when you get done hunting/scouting them. What do you think??? PM me if you are.

Just found out that I got the tag this year!!!! So pumped right now. Now to find some good bucks in the high country.

Thanks everybody, fun hunt, got to see a lot of bucks. Colorado resident took 6-7 pts. I had seven and drew a tag. I talked to a non-resident and it took him 11 points to draw. Beautiful country, lots of game, I couldn't have asked for more!!!
