I drew out for the rifle controlled hunt for elk..having a tough time finding much information for a DIY hunt. Looking for general information on access, types of terrain, etc. I will have an atv/utv with me as well as my pack. Willing to hike in aways if need be..don't really know what the trophy potential is in this unit either. Since I'm there elk hunting, general season deer is also open. Any input as far as deer hunting in 49?

I dont have much info for you. I have only hunted the area once. I did put in for the same area but didnt draw. I was deer hunting and didnt see a buck in three days!! So lots of does. Elk I seen some nice bulls and lots of cows. Some of the area is horse or foot only no motorized vehicles. Beautiful country!!! Thats about all I know.

Thank you, that's more than I had before! I was considering buying the OTC deer tag but I think I'll concentrate on filling my bull tag. Do you know of any maps that show the non motorized areas and where to get them? Can you say in general terms where you saw the bulls? Up high, down low, in non motorized area or not? Road hunting, glassing, hiking? I'll have limited time to hunt and won't get to scout, so any way to be ahead of the game I'm up for. Thanks again for responding!

As far as maps go the Idaho fish and game website might have one. I usually hike and backpack so I dont no much about those kind of maps. As far as how high...the bulls I seen were between 5000 and 7000 in a nonmotorized area. I seen them while hiking and glassing.

Thanks a bunch firebeck, I'll have my pack and gear with me, so that will def be an option. I won't get to Idaho until the end of October, so expecting some snow..not sure how that will affect access. I appreciate your input!

For what it's worth, I hunted both deer and elk in unit 49. The deer hunting was no good, but I did manage to get my first bull. He was an 8x7, I shot him at 370 yds on Halloween night.

Way to get it done in a new area! That always makes a guy pretty anxious going in, but is an awesome felling when it all works out!
