Has anyone on here hunted Idaho unit 9 for moose, elk or deer. I drew a unit 9 moose tag and am looking for all the help I can get as I am a LONG ways from the unit. This will also be my first hunt for moose. I drew the full season tag but I am planning on being there for the first two weeks of season unless I get convinced there is a better time. All help appreciated!

I killed my Idaho moose in 2007,on October 2nd,and my son in law killed his in 2008, on October 4th. My point is i would not hunt the first two weeks of the season for two reasons, the rut doesn't start until around the 20th of September, and the first week of October is cool enough so as to avoid spoilage. If you have to pack one out a long distance and you are hunting in hot weather you not only face spoilage but blow flies as well. I would get a tape, and try and imitate their calls, you are in for a very fun and exciting hunt! It looks like unit 9 produced some big bulls in 2015.

Haven't hunted 9, but several units in the area. I have to second brdhuntr from what I've seen as far as timing goes. Seems like it was 1-2 weeks later than elk. It's a great hunt.

the joe\Clearwater divide is some bad ass country. Very steep, treed and unforgiving. It is beautiful.
I have spent some time in there, but not really hunting. I have done numerous backpack trips in the mallard larkins and just played around table camp a few times. I might be there this weekend. But I doubt it also, probably still to much snow to get in there still. Horses will probably be your friend. There where lots of fires in this general area last year.
