I have been in the unit three time looking and planning my mule deer hunt. Things have changed and now I am spending my days in Rochester Mn waiting on my wife to recover from lung surgery. I already sent Colorado my bear tag and ask for a refund. The mule deer tag will be a different story, I will keep the points and they can keep the money.
We were here at Mayo about six weeks ago and could have had surgery then but she wanted me to get in the bear hunt so we returned to Arkansas. When we returned to Arkansas she was not in good enough shape for me to leave so I sent the tag back. I plan to wait as long as posssible before sending the mule deer tag back. There is always Nebraska which is a little later in the seasons and I may not be able to do that either.
I guess this is what I get for getting old, even old hunter is young compared to me. She has sponsored lots of good hunting so maybe she can get well before I hunt again.
I need to say thanks to the Mayo Clinic and their best in the world health care. (Wish Obama could see this)

I have to agree. Your wife is very important and if she is anything like mine and it sounds like she is she would want you to go. But in her time of need you should be with her no doubt. There is plenty if time to hunt

Yeah, you got me on age. I was a Christmas baby.

Rib will be fine. I have to decide if I want a nice relaxed doe hunt with hardly any other hunters, or a bull elk hunt with 2000 other hunters? I'm not sure why i'm even thinking about it? The elk hunt will be torture.

Does are good to eat. That would be my choice. If you do hunt bull it will be in 55? They gather around the lake mentioned befor they come to winter ground. I have not seen this myself. Guide at Taylor Park told me

Unlikely they'd be moving as early as 2nd season. The lake would be the most crowded area.

The bulls at that time of year will most likely be alone in secluded areas. Sort of secluded with 2000 hunters. :)

My wife of over 50 years lost her gallant struggle to survive oct 12 at he Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. We had an exciting, adventurous life through the healthy years. She was a good shooter, especially with a handgun, having shot at least one 300 score. She wanted me to go on the september bear hunt but her condition was too weak for me to do that. I still have the mule deer tag but not the enthusiasm of before, still, I think I will get into the mountains just as she would want me to do. I appricate the dedication and participation of a lifetime of exploring. RIP Betty

So sorry for your loss. You got to spend over 50 years with her, that is certainly a blessing in itself. You should go spend a little bit of time in the mountains.

Xtreme, Imagine all the wonderful memories that you two made over 50 years of marriage. I've no doubt that Betty was a fine person. I pray that your times in the mountains will be filled with those memories of her.

Xtreme, sorry for your loss. Enjoy all the things she would have wanted you to do. The mountains are one of the most peaceful places on earth. The remote country is just like God created, unchanged & perfect. My thoughts & prayers are with you.
