Hello all,
I drew Nevada 061,071 muzzleloader for bull elk. I have never been in these units. Any help would be appreciated. I am 61 years old...won't ever draw another tag like this again, want to make it count.
I also drew 011-013 muzzleloader deer (on my 5th choice?). There again, any help would be great.

So I see you're from out of state, I'm just gonna throw this out there. I've had a couple awesome tags at the same time before too and my biggest regret was not turning one back in (which would obviously be the deer tag) because it's hard to give two great tags the attention they deserve when they are so close together. Only down fall is you don get your money back but you get your point for the year. If it were me I going through it I would definitely do that.

That being said the elk hunt you got has some good bulls in it. Half the unit is steep and harder to hunt(071) and the other half is much easier(061), both having quality elk. Depends on how you hunt and what kind of shape you're in.

Great response from VM

Take your bull elk and make it the best hunt you can. Call the Bio and get as much info as you can. Scout as much as possible, learn the area and hunt hard. There are good bulls in that area as VM said you will find a good bull.

you got luckier than me,,,I put in both of those same units w 6 bp and didn't draw either?how many bp did you have?you should have a good time,,go for elk first ,then deer,,I would take a freezer and a generater as the weather might be warm for proper meat care and so your not rushed on the deer hunt.i would think there would be enough time to do both,i certainly would

Bugling bulls in September, it doesn't get much better. Last years combined resident and non-res quotas were 34 total. Those areas are huge so hunter pressure should be minimal.
During the rut I would look in the lower country along the Burneau River near the foothills of the mountains. I have also seen a lot of elk sign on the west side of Copper Mtn in 071 and there are big areas of black timber there. It is one heck of a hike there to get there.
There was a very big burn in the lower country near Chaleston Res about 15 years ago so that could also be a place to check out.
Good luck to you and let us know how you do, so many guys come here and get info only to never be heard from again.

I thought about turning in the tag and saving the points...but I am retired and have the time to hunt. The elk will get the entire season if needed. I am 61 (62 in Oct.) and I am working out as much as I can. I will probably concentrate on 061, but am not afraid to take on whatever necessary to kill a great bull.
Thanks for the feedback.

I had 15 elk points and 5 deer points. I drew the deer tag on my 5th choice. I still may turn the deer tag back and eat the tag fee. I will make that call after I have scouted for elk.

with you being retired,id think twice about turnin in that deer tag ,,,with the later part of the month to finish up deer huntin you could make the deer hunt as hard or easy as you want, depending on time spent elk huntin,,ya never know,,you might bag a nice elk with plenty of time to spare for the deer hunt

Imo it's not just about having the time to hunt, it's the scouting and all the time it takes to learn areas and find big bucks. Unless you are familiar with an area or have some good bucks you know of it can be hard going into a new place. I'm guessing being out of state his scouting efforts will be toward the elk tag.

I don't know if Nevada does this, but in Idaho you can give a controlled tag to a child or a grandchild. that would be a pretty cool gift.

In Nevada you can't "gift" a tag to someone. A returned tag is given to someone who wished to be designated as an alternate if they didn't draw back when applications were done.

I leave Sunday for Nevada. I turned my deer tag back in...too much going on to take full advantage of the tag. Hoping for cooler weather and some early rut activity.

Nothing to do on this thread but wait for randy's 350" bull pictures. Good luck.

I killed a 6x6 on the 14th day of the hunt. Finally got some weather and that turned the bulls to bugling. Thanks to all for the great input, it was greatly appreciated.
