Hey guys, as some of you know, I am transferring to UNR in August. Although draw results havent come out yet, I am trying to find out other ways to get out hunting and fishing in the Reno area; something that I can just pack up and get out for the weekend. I hear that theres a lot of waterfowl out there and of course a lot of good predator hunting right in my backyard. Also looking forward to learning how to fly fish!
Hoping to turn my apartment into a wild game processing station. Hope the complex has a nice skinning shed, Haha.
Thanks

Hey buddy, I was in your shoes about four years ago. The chukar hunting is great and there are a lot of different mountain ranges to explore, but one thing I really got into was blue grouse hunting up by Mount Rose. Don't have to drive nearly as far and the scenery is a bit nicer. Plus I was actually finding birds more consistently. However, it did take me a lot of hiking and exploring new country to discover some honey holes for both chukar and blue grouse. Don't be surprised if people will be a bit hesitant to tell you where they're killing birds as the chukar tend to get a lot of hunting pressure.

Start building points and applying smart. I drew a bull tag this year with only 3 points so you never know.

A fun hunt that I did one year was swan. The application is in August I think and I'm pretty sure there is 100% draw odds (they go on sale as OTC after the draws are over). I never found great waterfowl hunting; a few ducks down at Washoe Lake and at the Stillwater NWR out by Fallon was it, but I did get my swan, which was pretty cool. With the drought hitting so hard I really just stuck to upland birds and never even went waterfowl hunting the past two years. In fact I think Washoe lake is completely dry right now.

Flyfishing the Truckee is fun and it goes right through town. There are some surprisingly big fish in there. It is a really hard river to fish though, IMO. Coming from Montana, I just couldn't consistently find the type of water I was used to. However, they do stock it pretty well so you'll at least find luck catching the little planters pretty consistently if nothing else. Pyramid Lake is a real gem. The fishing is fairly bizarre with people totting ladders into the lake and whatnot, but those Lahontan Cutthroat are freaking awesome and huge. I really wish I would have fished it more while I was here in Reno. If you can get someone to show you the ropes out there, you should really look into it.

Hope that helps and gives you a few starting points! Feel free to pm me if you'd like.

There is some pretty good fishing from the state line downstream to Truckee. We use lures or float worms into likley looking holes. I don't fly fish but I have seen people doing that. Once you get to know where to access the river you should have lots of fun.
Good luck.

Waterfowl is gonna be HORRIBLE if we don't get any water this fall. It's been bad the past couple years.

You can always run up and over the hill back into CA for deer, hike into the OTC D zones right on the edges of the X zones... some good bucks up there and not too far from Reno.
