Just wondering if anyone has hunted or has any info on hunting South Africa? This is on my bucket list along with several others! I'm interested in killing a Gemsbok & a Kudu. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bryan

Never been, but I'd like to go sometime in the next 5 years. I plan on attended SCI convention in Dallas this January. There will be lots of good info there. Got a buddy that has went twice cost him a little over $5K both times. He has a whole wall full of cool mounts. Been applying in Texas & NM for Gemsbok for quite a while. If I don't draw soon, I think I'll annie-up & head to Africa!

I have a friend who books trips kind of like an agent. Never inquired about prices with him but may be able to save you some money? If your interested ill chat with him about it and get some costs for ya. He is always donating hunts to local wildlife non profit groups for raffle. Im assuming the guide he works with is pretty reasonable? Let me know and ill contact him.

P.s. Never been :)

Hardstalk, I'm interested in what you can find out for me. I would like to start planing a hunt for 3-5 years from now. I know to some that sounds like a long ways down the road but time flies! My wife is going with me on this hunt so it will cost me double! So that is another reason to plan well in advance.

Thanks, Bryan

My dad and mom went to South Africa a few years ago. My dad was the only one that hunted but they both had a blast, was better than they ever thought it would be. My dad decided to have his heads mounted down there as it saved a little bit of money in shipping. If you decide to do that make sure to keep in touch with the taxidermist. He kept in touch and had the guy send him pics of the progress, ended up having him redo some work on his Kudu through what he saw on the pictures. Be aware, $5000 might be for the hunt but there are additional fees like shipping, taxidermy and such. It's also on my bucket list, a Kudu is one of my dream animals.

South Africa has some great hunting my partner went last year. He did a 7 day safari harvested 5 animals and his hunt was. $4500 + shipping, gratuity and airline costs. Easy to book I'm planing a bow hunting safari for 2015.
My partner used a consultant from Hunting Affair.

Eberle,

First, on your tag line...Amen and Amen! Saw Lone Survivor last night and every American should see that...to appreciate and understand the price of our freedom and the men and women who lay it all on the line.

Have been to Africa a couple of dozen times on business and had the privilege to hunt there twice. Both times the hunts were organized by my local friends. Generally you pay for your room and board and then an additional fee for anything that you kill or wound. Tips are additional...PH, trackers, skinners, cooks, etc. One thing I have found that are really appreciated by everyone as tips are good hunting knives!

On taxidermy...you can have it mounted there and shipped home, or shipped home and then mounted. Either way, the cost is about the same...over there, the taxidermy is a bit less...but then your shipping cost of a large crate is more than just the head, horns and cape. Also the cape has to be decontaminated there before is can be shipped abroad. Both of my trophies were done over there and very pleased with the results. One was an Impala and the other a Kudu, which was mounted with the mouth open.

Eberle,

I would also add the following suggestions:

1. I will not travel internationally without evacuation insurance. We used to use MedJet...now we use InternationalSOS. Both have medical evacuation capabilities...InternationalSOS also has security evacuation capability.

2. Same as here...always carry enough gun for not only what you are hunting...but also what you may encounter. We cut tracks on a kudu...only later to see the kudu was joined by two leopards and shortly thereafter arrived on the kill. The next day...same thing...this time with a single lion. In both cases we know we interrupted the meal and they all were nearby in the grass. In Africa you are not at the top of the food chain.

3. Wear or carry your boots on the plane with you. If your luggage/gun are lost or stolen...you can borrow clothes from the cook, a rifle from the PH...but you cannot borrow someone else's boots.

4. When I pulled out my bottle of wind indicator...I quickly got the nickname; 'The Gucci Hunter'. Leave it at home...over there you kick the dirt and see which direction the dust flies. :)

Africa is a blast. I had the privilege to apprentice as a PH with a high end safari co. In my stay we hunted everything from duiker to elephant and lion. here's a few bits of advice

1. You get what you pay for- if you want big trophies, go with a more expensive outfitter. If you want to kill a ton of stuff go cheaper.
2. Who is going?- If you are taking the wife, i'd suggest asking the guide what local attractions there are and what the sleeping arrangements are. Many nice concessions wont allot fixed buildings so you might be tent camping. Tents in Africa are quite luxurious but still aren't 5 star. Also have something for her to do if she isn't hunting. many PH's wives are nearby and eager to take a new girl shopping
3. Know what you want before you go, but keep an open mind- After seeing deifferant species up close and personal, you may decide one animal is more interesting than another. Also you never know when you will encounter a giant something so listen to your PH. If he is adamant you should shoot something DO IT!
4. Avoid "color species" i.e. black, white, or copper springbok- these are mainly hunted on small fenced ranches. The trick down there is to put powder cocaine in the drinking water so the animals are wired. its very entertaining but you'll be hunting a 500 acre pen where you can see one side to the other. youll be lucky to get a 400 yd shot and its not a fun hunt
5. Shoot some warthogs- you wont regret it. they are fun and you can often make them charge you.
6 sightsee- I was blessed to travel from camp to camp with the trackers and saw some amazing sights. We saw the Kimberley diamond mine and actually found a rock with a tiny diamond in it. if u r around a large body of water take some time to watch the birds. Im not a bird guy but there is some cool stuff!

7- research wherever you want but look for a deal at a small SCI chapter fundraiser. Dallas has great ones but theres a lot of deep pockets there. at a local chapter you are likely to find a 7 day hunt with a couple animals for 2k and add more to that. keep in mind airfare is $$$$

Hope this helps and please feel free to Pm me with an questions I can help with or ask on here. I'm not the most experienced guy on here im sure but I have over 2500 hrs in Africa, mostly behind the scene stuff and on the guide truck!

Its a blast over there and you wont regret it!

I'll be making my third trip over in June. You can have a great 7-10 day plains game safari taking 6-8 animals for $4-5K. Taxidermy is a personal choice. You'll need to make your own choices on taxidermy. Airfare will run around $2500. Keep in mind, not all of these costs will come at the same time. They'll roughly be in this order over several years: hunt deposit, airfare, hunt itself (balance), shipping, and taxidermy. The last two can swap dependent upon where you have the work completed. I've done both with taxidermy. First trip I had it done over there and second trip done here in the states, which will be what I do henceforth.
