While out scouting this weekend we saw a buck that is around 165ish maybe 170 right now. I'm just curious if he will turn into a real giant or just put on a little more.
From what I have read. They seem to put on most of their tine length in the last month of growing. I might be wrong but I thought I read that in Mike's first Mule Deer book.
Not sure on mule deer but I know for whitetails each animal is different. Case in point I had 2 mature deer I watched all summer. One only put on a couple inches of antler after July 1st and ended up being the 151 inch I shot with my bow. The other put on antler very slowly until mid July when from Mid July to beginning of August he blossomed into a 170 inch plus deer.
Saw 2 bucks last night and again this am. Horns are out past their ears and turned up into the main beam fork. One has the forked main beams just forking again, will be at least a 4x4. The other will probably be just a forkie. Still a lot of growth left to go.
I was at the rifle range yesterday and saw 6 bucks waltzing along the road entering the range....no camera ARGH!! 4 of them will be really nice 4x4s in the 160+ range with one closer to 180. Looks to me like they are 75 to 80% done with antler growth.
